Depends on how you gear it, I have to go out of my way to loft the front with 3.2 gearing. (15/48). If the 430 is 55 and KTM/Husky 450's are 62, I'd guess somewhere between the 2. I have started alongside lots of MX models in races, and the Beta will run with them and even run them down once you get past the gate (I should get a starting front end lock down device).

Here is the start at 36 seconds. I run OK before my tongue gets stuck in the spokes ?

At the KTM demo days the 450 commands your full attention to keep from looping it in certain situations like jump landings and getting back on the throttle with the rear wheel firmly pressed into the dirt. Likely less flywheel and shorter gearing, but not for me at 59yrs. old without taming it.

Fun vid! .. Yea The Beta 500 rs is really a great one bike do everything bike..You can ride to the races.. race mx or hare scrambles or whatever..and ride home.. ..and I likke yours with the carb better too.

Here's  a description of the purvines race 498 race of 2013 june issue of Dirtbike. It has the classic Beta style of big bore class in a pro bike..older..still carbed but still quite similar to now ..Good reference for those who havent seen. Used to be 498rr and the same bike but street legal called a 520 rs. ...took on my phone just now.

OK, here it is...... stock 2017 RR480 on the dyno (Red line)...the Green line is another manufacturer's stock 2017 500

Power peaks at a bit over 60HP from 8k to 9k RPM

I will try and get some of the 2018 BETA 4Ts on to the same dyno so we can see what difference the dual injectors make to power delivery

Good job Roon. I knew it was plenty fast. The amazing thing is how linear (straight line) the Beta is, and the little hitch in the early part of the KTM's is exactly where you don't want it.

Just over 60 RWHP from 8,000 to 9,000 rpm, well I'll be!

Thanks for the dyno chart.  Even if it might be 10% optimistic, we'd still be at 55-56 RWHP.

Trust me Ben, no reason to think the Beta doesn't have that kind of HP, it can and does accelerate right alongside the MX bikes with that power (watch the video).

Trust me on this too, when you do let the big dog off the porch, make sure it's pointed in the right direction and you have more than enough room to drop anchor.

It's hard to believe, but it will outrun a CR500 too...

My Beta 525 is plenty fast and Idk.. it's something like 50 hp?.. I'm not sure now I looked a long time ago.. but it didn't even matter.. It just had plenty of power everywhere and it is sooo easy to handle.. That's the best part to me. The bike handles and the power is so useable.. Now with all the newest  big bore betas you guys have.. There's even more power on top and the chassis is improved and more nimble . It's an even better weapon. .

I totally believe that if I were to race myself on the stock 96 CR500R I had, and the Beta, that I would run right with the CR500R.  If I recall, the stock CR500R and the KX500 were right around 55-56 HP with the KX having a little more on top as it had a powervalve and when racing the buddy I had with a 2001 KX500, I would have him until the top of 6th gear where the KX would run away as the gearing was able to allow the bike a higher top speed, but until then, I had the KX.

I leave my buddy and his 2000-something KTM 380 EXC in the dust, as soon as he drops the hammer and I let him get the jump, I reel him right in and at the next gear shift I pull away and by the next gear change he is getting left far-behind.

Every time I have let the 500 RR-S run, it has been nothing short of breathtaking and everything I hoped the 477.5 cc motor would be power-wise as I wanted all I could get.  The best part about it is if I want to go slow and be as quiet as possible, it is easy and not scary to anyone within earshot, something that could NEVER happen with any 2-stroke.

I only go 170lbs, nekkid, so I have the HP-weight advantage on anyone, almost every single time and the Beta rides so well on its stock suspenders for me.

It's really too Bad Honda didn't keep the 2 stroke big bores and keep developing.. I'd still like around a 400cc or so 2 stroke upgraded dirt bike estart 6 speed. That's a good size and plenty of power. It's still in peoples minds that guys still want a big bore 2 stroke. I have a couple of friends with 500cc cr motors in new generation Honda chassis ..One is out riding today actually..and it's a trick bike.. I'd like the new estart to go with it too..

..but the Beta 480 500 is a different animal.. Great and better in it's own way..  smooth and powerful handles great and a joy to ride..

just saw this..

I thought, for years, until Service Honda stopped making them, about getting CR500AF, but still, didn't want the noise, and no matter how lame, to have to kick start the bike.  Noise is the enemy and there is just no getting around it in my neck of the woods.  2-stroke, by and large, means no riding.  The power is awesome but at the same time, the 477.5 cc mill that Beta has made for us makes me forget all about a somewhat lighter, smoky, and loud 500 cc or whatever the CR500 motor's displacement was, as the Beta has all the power that makes me happy.

I love the pic of the Beta on the dyno with the supermoto wheels/tires.

You know that depends as my Beta 300 is pretty damn quiet stock I thought for sure it was a spark arrestor stock.. but no... I made it a tiny bit louder putting a pro circuit shorty slip on.. The stock 4 stroke piped Beta is quiet too but change the pipe toward how the 4 stroke mx bikes are and it's just miserablely loud. It was like that with my 525 RS ... stock it was unbelievably quiet for a 4 stroke.. but then the fmf slip on made it more noisy. take out the fmf spark arrestor insert  and it sounds like a harley at sturgis.

Zachary why KTM chose Synerjet to control the TPI on their 2Ts ?

That is an awesome chart! I've been looking for a power graph for months! Thank you.

Roon, is there a torque curve from that run? I'd love to see that. It is impressive how smooth the HP curve is, that's not too common.

Late to the party but possibly interesting for numbers/data gearheads...

Back in 2015, when trying to decide if I was going to buy a 390 RR or 500 RS, I too wanted to know some numbers. Did some digging and calling, and learned (from Beta USA) that the then claimied HP outputs were: 390 RR = 42 hp, 500 RS = 52, same as it says on my MSO. Thought I had the torque numbers written down somewhere, but I can't find them.

Bought the 500 RS, one of the last carbureted bikes.
