Motoz Mountain Hybrid might be the tire for my Xtrainer?

Recommended Posts

Finally!  All the hard surface traction of a trials tire that has the ability to clean itself

out when you get in the muck.  This could be the ticket?  I told my dealer that I would

be the guinea pig and he could slap a pair of these on my Xtrainer when it comes in

this March!  What do you think about it?

A whole bunch got delivered to the ossa gasgas dealer up the street and there's 2 hr trail race today. It's the new tire so we'll see what guys say about it. I like how they look.. It's supposed to be 16 lbs but it didn't seem that heavy when I picked it up and looked at it. It looks good... plus it's still going to still be determined how good it is from region to region.. I'm looking at my stock Beta 300 tires and thinking I'll just use those up first. I know this same dealer had a whole bunch of GT216X gummy tires? before one of our hare and hound races and it didn't do well here. The knobs blew off fast and then it just didn't work as good as a bunch of other tires.. apparently... There are no GT216's for sale in the shop at all. I do see kenda, Maxxis. Pirelli, Dunlops there now..and the motoz hybrid  I'm wondering how the motoz hybrid works with the mud locally.. I figure better than a regular trials but I just don't know.. I wonder about it being as good as a good knobby too. Try it and tell us what you think. ?  :ride:

I think the guy with the freeride ktm has a motozhybrid on it.. in this vid.. guy with the dark long sleeve shirt. I can't verify it now for sure though but he's been using it on his bikes and he's selling them in his shop locally. This is a nice day too .. so to me the good day to test is on an ugly nasty slick day.. but that's later when I get my own tire to try myself. I think this is the only vid that I can think of that I could find that someone has a motozhybrid. Actually this is the guy who had it on his bike before it was being sold.. must have been  just letting some dealers try before selling.

Actually I ordered my tire months ago but there was some kind of shipping thing and it was stuck on the docks in LA? anyway.. it ought to be here soon. ..but really now I have a flock of tires..front and back.. The other dealer up the street has a flock of them now. I heard mixed reviews from different guys today at the race.. some liked and others didn't so????? Doesn't matter I still have to pay for and try it anyway.. I'm wondering if it would be a decent DS tire too.. I heard today that one guys likes it. ..and I heard from another guy that they took all the air out of it with a tubliss and the guy wasn't happy because it still didn't hook up.. so really that's 2 far ends of the spectrum.

This Kenda looks slightly more open, it might be better in mud.... - M.

My dealer has these coming in too.. Dunlop is out and Kenda is the new sponsor for the Beta race teams so I guess the dealerships may be more forward in promoting their products. I don't know now. I was more excited about the motoz hybrid and nice to see the equilibrium coming out too but now I'm thinking that the proof is in the pudding. I heard good and bad about the motoz hybrid yesterday.. from different riders.. One said it didn't hook up and the other said it did. When mine comes I'll try it. I know one thing.. I'm not excited about the enduro michelin that comes on the 300 rr. It's ok but I liked the MT 16 a bunch better..

Only thing that I question about that Kenda is its a square profile tire, like a TT. To me that says more non-linear release when it does let go. I have ridden the Mitas TTs for the years they were available. They were a stiffer, round profile TT, like the new MotoZ but with shorter knobs and a little tighter spacing. They also cornered a lot better than your typical square TT. Not with the absolute grip of a knobby, but linear and more predictable.

I did take an idea from the Kenda, and cut some braking scoops into an MT43 I have. Should be interesting. My hybrid has finally shipped so I should have it soon.

  • 3 weeks later...

I didn't try my mountain hybrid but for some reason I'm thinking I may want to either sype some knobs or cut them out completely .. of course I'll have to try the tire first.. but the tire does seem hard and the side walls aren't soft. There isn't much flex.. but Ive got to say that the other motoz tires do kind of break in and soften after riding a while. The other motoz tires  do last very long. The knobs are big and the tire is big.. It's not soft like a trials tire like I thought it might be.. but just thinking out loud from looking and squeezing the tire a bit... just have to ride with it.

When riding with the hybrid in a 2700 acre riding park that I haven't ride in several years.

The terrain is sand and was a mud fest after recent rain, the hybrid was slipping all over but mostly everyone was.

It packed mud but self cleaned quickly.

I know this isn't a sand/mud tire but thought I would share the info.

Plan on riding my usual hard pack/rocky stuff soon and see how it does.

It's hard too belive these tires wear quickly but will see.

My dealer said he would gladly sell me one, but they are super soft compound and wear out fast.  He said the Dunlops are almost as good and wear

a lot better.

He must be the only one that knows they wear out quickly, to me they are about the same compound as their IT tire, and they last for a VERY long time.

I'd wait and hear a few more reviews, first hand....

Since they just came out and we are still in winter through most of the country, I'm holding off in making a evaluation. I think IF this tire shines it will be like most other trials type tires when the terrain is a little dryer.

IMHO, I would not buy a dunlop for my Beta, as I ride too many diverse terrains, and I've ridden the Dunlop Trials tire, but on a 530 Orange bike, in certain conditions it was great, in others, not so good, with no side bite on the Dunlop, I wanted to stay away from it on the Beta, as it loves to get way over on its side...

Yeah, I bought it for the side-grip that it looks like it "could" achieve. With Tubeless tubes I should be able to run that Hybrid way down low and get a good bite in the Sierra's rocky/gravel and root filled single track terrain and the desert for most of the year, yet in deep muck I still like the MotoZ IT for my little 450.

The casing on the Hybrid is stout, which is good and bad. Good for traction at low pressures Should be able to get a great bite from 3-8lbs? But in a dual sport mode may need 8-13lbs for sidewall stability on the road. Which for me means breaking out the pump for a little "air-time" hoping to find a balance, also the heavy weight will play a few games with the clickers, no biggie though.

Time will tell after I get my suspension back, can't wait!!
