2002 cr250 worst CR250?

Recommended Posts

hi people im just curious about your input on all this trash i read about the 02 cr250 being a terrible bike. and prolly the worst year for them. i picked one up and it is absolute dynamite compared to my other cr250 and a 2002 rm250 i also previously owned. i did have a problem with the servo motor on the 2002 CR but this bike will mope the floor with the 99 cr250 or the suzuki RM250 i had. its actually the best 2 stroke ive ever ridin. the bike is in great condition with v force reeds and fmf fatty, also an fmf shorty silencer. i can catwalk the bike in 5th no problem at all. im just curious what is supposed to be so bad about this bike. i love mine. it has a wicked sweet powerband.CHEERS!!!!! . if this is the worst year than whats the best year the 1979 twin shock aircooled with no powervalve.

Maybe this bike seems great because your previous two bikes were pieces of junk?

Just kidding, alot of the trash talk about the CR250's motors were because of the case reed design and the powerband. My friend has a 98 or a 99 RM 250 that was in good condition and I thought it was a great bike.

2002 Honda CR 250's either won or finished a very close second in every magazine shootout that year. I have ridden one. They are very good, very durable, handle great, feel super-light, and like any motor, you can mod it into whatever you wish. MXA did a test of one motor package available back then that was really affordable, yet gave the bike 55 rear-wheel horsepower, all while feeling very smooth and being easy-to-ride.

If I were riding mine in the dunes or open desert I think I'd absolutely love it. However I mostly ride rocky, gown in single track and I'm really getting frustrated with the low end jetting on the TMX carb--its terrible--and many others feel the same way. Once that's taken care of I'll have few complaints.

I don't know about smoking a healthy 99CR or 02RM but they do put down the power up top ? Good bikes imo

To be honest, I'm surprised you like your '02's powerband better than your '99's. I've got extensive experience with the '01 (roughly the same engine as your 99) and absolutely love it. Not that the '02 is a bad bike, but it lacks the hit that the '01 has. The '02's frame and ergo's are without a doubt 100% better, however, I feel that Honda did go a step backwards with the engine. It took ages (and lots of $ in suspension) for me to feel comfortable on my '01 after making the transition from an '04, but I have come to love the '01. There are certain sections and trails that make me wish I was still on my '04 (mostly whooped out and chopped up trails), but for the most part, I do like the '01 better. The '02 seems like it has more linear, roll on power, while the '01 has exponential power with a strong hit. This is all just opinion, every rider has different thoughts. If I had more time and money, I would be putting an '01 engine in an '02+ frame...

i think the 99 may have running issues then. and the 02 has fmf fatty shorty, and V force 3 reed valve. the one thing i dont like on the 2002 is the RC valve. my servo motor gave out and i got one off an 04 coming off ebay. i hope it works. i took the little motor out and hooked it to a 12volt battery and it wouldnt go till i turned the shaft a bit by hand . so i think thats the problem. i dont know why they use the rc valve.

Over the 20 yrs I been riding I've owned and ridden too many bikes to even keep track of anymore and to be quite honest my 02 CR250 is right up there in being one of the best I ever owned! I cannot find any flaw with it weather on the track or single trails and does everything I ask it to do and then some and dead reliable to boot.

Other guys I ride with all tried my bike and love it!!

I love my 2002 CR250R. The bike handles great and has a very smooth and manageable power delivery. Build quality is very good and the ergos are excellent. The front end stays very planted in corners and it also has good brakes. No significant complaints with the '02 to date.

mine is awesome, especially on top end. i drag race it at fairs and such stock and it usually gets me second to any cr 500 i run into.. but i still beat 450s and 250s who are just as skilled as me. i just get em on top end

On the 02, who rode this year model in super cross and motocross?

I picked one up bout 10 years sgo got blown up cheap.  Took to practice track and thing was a dog electric feeling powerband i didn't like it sold couple days later.  But had brandnew 09 gz250 race bike that i was use to and cr was bone stock.  My 96 cr250 is much faster engine for mx. I think the 02 would be good woods bike tho

Not a bad bike at all. My friend had one and it absolutely smoked my 99 kx 250. He now has a 97 that mine keeps up with and mines basically blown up. Imo 97-99 is the worst. Everyone claims they're amazingly fast but not too fast compared to newer Cr's. vibrates really bad also. But my 89 outruns every bike it's ever raced against including 02,97 cr, 99 kx, wr 450,.

I've had two '02's love and miss them. Do yourself a favor and never get rid of it if you are a woods rider. Before that was a '98, handling was bad but it was scary fast. I now have a '06 cr250. Motor is a light switch. Which I'm not a fan of for woods riding. Even with rekluse its hard to ride. Hopefully I can figure out how to tame this beast!

Search for threads here from CamP. He details how to setup this bike. First step is to make the motor useful.
