whats better a 400ex or a suzuki ltz 400

Recommended Posts

Both great quads, but if I had to choose I'd get the EX. I have two of them and they are bulletproof. My buddy owns a Z400 and it's a really nice quad. He had some cam chain slap on his in the first couple months he bought it and had to replace the cylinder, but other than that he has zero problems with it. The Z is a little more responsive in the throttle, but you can't beat the reliability of the EX.

My '02 EX has had no problems at all since I bought it brand new in '01. Still has the stock battery on it. My '99 is another story though. I bought it used and I've replaced almost everything you can think of on it. It was a POS when I bought it but now that it's all back together it'll outrun a Z any day. It's still pretty much stock except for the FMF exhaust system and K&N filter. Plus I dropped the rear sprocket two teeth. I rebuilt the top end with OEM standard bore piston and it'll rip the Z out of the hole every time.

Like I said before though both are great quads, just depends on how you like to ride. The Z is just a little bit taller but still great for trails, climbing hills, etc.

I have owned both.

I like the EX for riding tight slower technical trails. That engine will lug down and idle through technical stuff all day long. Best trail quad of all time!

On the other hand, the Z engine likes to rev so I prefer it for faster open trails or wide open country. Being water cooled and fuel injected (if it is a newer one), it is a fair bit faster than the EX in open country. On a tight trail however....it has no advantage.

For some reason, my Z always jumped nose low! This got to be dangerous in some situations, so I got rid of it.

If you look at the quads side by side on paper the z400 stands out as a winner. But riding them both I definitely prefer the 400EX. I feel like it sits lower and doesn't want to tip in the corners as much. However you will be more than happy with either quad.

i own an 03 ltz400 & its great, i give it hell & it loves it. Great fun, they do sit high but $40 for a lowering kit which took it down low as. Ive never had a big nosie on it always lands rear first for me. Ive never had a problem with it very reliable, starts first time every time.

But like 'zkl1995' im a Suzuki fan lol

We have a 2006 LTZ400 and a 2007 400EX and I LOVE the LTZ way more. I blow by the 400EX like it's standing still. I would get another LTZ any day over the Honda. Don't get me wrong, the Honda is a good bike, we were racing each other out at the dunes last weekend and I was pulling away no problem, he has been riding way longer then me and used to race, he made me trade him bikes and try again and hands down the LTZ took it everytime. We also ride trails and I like that the LTZ has a little more ground clearence then the EX also the LTZ front suspension is adjustable where as on the 400EX it isn't. Also the LTZ is water cooled and you can just get way more out of the LTZ by far!

I had a 2004 Z400 until early this year. I never had any problems with it, and I rode it in every terrain except sand dunes. It was my mud machine, snow mobile, rock crawler, back roads beater, and occational track machine (never raced, just took it to practice nights). It never let me down, and nothing important never broke. It loved being reved in the high rpms, and if you are good with a clutch, it is just as good in the tight trails as a 400EX is said to be. I never rode a 400EX until after I got rid of my Z, but after riding it I knew that stock for stock, the Z400 felt better. Throttle response was way better, riding position was more comfortable, and power delivery was quicker and bigger. And if you buy the carbed models, they cost the same price as a 400EX, and you were getting way more for the price. Better everything in my opinion. The 400EX is a good quad from what I hear, but I wouldn't buy one.
