Wire tie on grips..

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, what gauge wire are you using for your grips?

Also, what type of wire, stainless, aluminum, plain steel?

I wrapped wire around once and it cut right thru the grip. I was using soft compound Renthal half waffle.

I just put on pillow-tops and I don't want to ruin these. Should I wrap wire around twice or is once good?

Thanks in advance

.032 SS safety wire, same as used for all other fasteners on the bikes.

Safety wire 18139.JPGcomes in several diameters and can be bought for just a few $$ in a 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, or larger lb roll.http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/tools.asp?tool=all&Group_ID=769&store=snapon-store

Safety wire pliers are also fairly cheap.. 49676.JPG$20 will get you a set that will work for the occasional use.. $100 gets you a snap on set.http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/tools.asp?tool=all&Group_ID=770&store=snapon-store

just curious, what is the purpose of doing this??

Grip retention... just another way... or used in combo with something else.

I use a bit of spray paint, and safetywire in two places...

No grip slippage, an damage to the grips, very easy to swap out.. snip two wires, slice grip, wipe bar with brake clean, install new set.

oh ok, so when my girps get thrashed i'll probably have to cut/scrape them off and buy a new throttle sleeve. awesome. i wish i would have found out about this sooner. oh well

You shouldn't need to get a new throttle sleeve. Just some careful scraping to get old glue off and you're good to go. I've swapped grips more times than I can remember on my bike and I'm still on the original throttle sleeve.

Another reason for the safety wire on the ends of the grips is to keep water from getting under them, especially if you power wash your bike.

Just use Gorilla glue. This glue is ausome. I gaurantee if u use this glue the grips will never move in place. And if you ware the grips out and go to put on a new set just cut them off and take some carb spray to spray the handle bars let it set for a minute the spray a rag with the carb spray and the glue just rolls off.

I use this glue all the time and it makes the grips stick like cement and they wont even budge and there is no need to use safty wire.

Ive tried scotts glue, renthal glue super glue various types of glue you get a lowes and nothing has compared to Gorilla glue. I have even used hair spray to get the grips to stick and tried carb spray and gas also.

This glue is the only thing i have found that will make the grips stay in place and not twist or roll on the bars. You will just need to use it one time and one time only until the grips ware out.

I don't remember where I heard about it, but I've been using hair spray. Slips on easy when its wet, then holds tight till you're ready to cut and peel for a new set. I've gone through three or four sets of grips without any slip at all. No safety wire required.

I ride high country 90+ to 20's with freezing rain and snow, no problem.

Ive tried hairspray and cant get it to work for me. Maybe it was the brand I was using.

I've just been using whatever flavor my wife has under the sink, never really looked @ the brand. I spray it into the grip [a good solid coating] and slip them on. Let them dry for a good 24+ hours and never had a hint of slip.

I've done the same thing myself...gives ya good practice at putting on new grips. As for the wire gauge...not sure the thickness (gauge) but the thinner the better so you don't feel it unless you can hide it between any raised areas on the grip. I would go with Stainless in the event they get wet, aluminum is too soft and will break trying to twist...

Personally I decided against the wire and just applied extra glue...seems to be working thus far...

i dont think I gave the hairspray enough time to set up before using the grips.

I may try it the next time and give it a day to adhere and then see the final outcome.

It would be less messy and easy clean up for the next set of grips to be put on.

Never done the hairspray trick...I recently put on a new set of grips onto knurled bars ()..what a treat...I thought, I first turn the grip inside out about half way then applied a liberal amount of glue onto the end of the grip and end of bar then rolled/slid them right on...no preblemo!

Now, for old school guys/...try using GAS.....my brother swore by it, I never had the cojones to try! Also paint is said to work!
