WR250R vs. DRZ400 (what is each bike's stock hp?)

Recommended Posts

Gents (and Ladies, of course):

Does anyone actually know the exact hp production for the 2008 WR250R and the 2008 DRZ400? I understand that hp is only part of the equation in a bike's performance, but I'm still very curious about the exact numbers. So, if you know, please share. Thanks!

IIRC the WR is between 25 and 27 stock depending on who you ask and I've read the DRZ was around 32-34.

According to Motorcyclist magazine...

2008 Suzuki DRZ-400SM

Measured horsepower: 32.5 bhp @ 7850 rpm

Measured torque: 23.9 lb.-ft. @ 6750 rpm

2008 Yamaha WR250R

Measured horsepower: 23.5 bhp @ 8750 rpm

Measured torque: 14.4 lb.-ft. @ 8250 rpm

But I have no idea if it is accurate and that is comparing the SM with the R; if that makes a difference.?

The DRZ has a bit more power, but the WR makes up for it with the 6 speed transmission.

I don't think either would walk away from the other based on the bike alone. (*in stock form)

Ranger:

Thanks for the information. Just took the WRR for a quick ride; it's a lot of fun as is, but I think changing out the rear sprocket would improve the low end (which is a little light). What I've read on TT suggest that a 46T or 47T rear sprocket would be a nice improvement.

I wouldn't ride either bike stock, they come WAY to restricted from the factory. May as well ride a scooter!

Both bikes have plusses and minuses though. The DRZ will be able to be opened up to be a much more powerful machine. The WRR has (reputedly) excellent service intervals.

Stick an aftermarket exhaust on both and you've got two totally different bikes. Or, as mentioned above, a sprocket change will also have an effect on the power delivery. Best to sort out what you want to do and ride both, then decide.

I'm not going there...I've seen 38 and 30 published at the crank respectively for the two bikes. Rear horsepower dynos are gonna give you a nice variety of results. With the DRZ you are gonna get more torque and that feels really good in your hands. However, the WR is going to be not only 10-20 lbs lighter, but it is a more dirt-friendly suspension and handling. So the DRZ is going to have advantages on the road and the WR is gonna have em off road. DRZ or WRR....this new question is becoming an "age old question". I am also struggling with it, and since I plan for more off-road, I'd prefer the WRR, but I can pick up a DRZ cheaper used right now....tough tough decision as both are going to be fun bikes.

I own a DRZ and have test ridden the WRR. If the DRZ had the sweet 6 spd transmission of the WRR there wouldn't even be a discussion. Weight is very close between them which does beg the question, why is a 250 so dang heavy? The DRZ is no light weight itself so .....???

I respect the WRR but truthfully I still prefer my DRZ though I do long for that 6 speed wide ratio trans and fuel injection. I can live with the FCR39 carb I have, but it's harder to live with the stupid close ratio 5 spd.

Regardless of the numbers, the feel of power (really torque) between the two is night and day. You gotta rev the piss out of the 250 get your power.

I've owned both. All my DRZ needed was the aibox opened up and re-jetted. The DRZ would absolutely win a drag race or no-clutch wheelie contest.

My WRR is totally stock  (I've read mixed results on the advantages of modding.)

Other than the power disadvantage the WRR is better in every way, on the street or in the dirt.
