It looks like on this forum oldktmrider69, lronald, and WFC have had the same issue.     Anybody else having repeats?  Anybody have a good solution?   The dealer talked to KTM and they said that they changed the case design for 2015 for this issue.    I don't have a clear story, but the oil is too hot on the CPS, so they added another oil window in the case.   They offered new cases but no labor.

I just had the same failure.  I have over 300 hours, but the failure was still a shock.  Luckily, after riding 140 miles of mostly tough terrain, I was heading back to the truck and it failed about five miles miles out.  I was traveling 55 mph on pavement for about 25 miles, so maybe that caused the oil to overheat - if that is really the cause of the failure.  But I run the high temp diesel oil that Rekluse recommends, so this surprises me.

Is there a reasonable way to prevent this?  This would be a real bother if it occurred on one of my multi-day adventure rides.

Since mine was at 114 hrs ( 350 xcfw ) and install a new one. Is it the pick up or engine case ? If its the pick up, did they redesign the new ones we are buying to correct the problem ? Luckly mine was on the road so it was easy to tow but it was on a 5 day ride that was cut short.  Do we need to remove the cover and check every 40 hrs ?

I think I found out why my pickup coil got destroyed...

I installed the new stator and pickup coil, and as I was tightening the bolts that hold the pickup coil, the column that holds the bolt cracked in half with very little effort.  I suspect it got damaged from vibration, and allowed the pickup coil to slip.

Maybe have to replace on a set number of hours like 80 ?

That was going to be my plan, only more often, maybe every oil change.   I sold the bike instead.

If thats the fix, I would go back to a Japanese  bike. Is their a way to contact KTM and ask these questions and get a straight answer ?

You should try to get an answer from them,  I tried but they didn't give me a straight answer.  I think I found a customer service number in their website someplace.  The second dealer I talked to (Apex in C Springs) was very helpful and they got the improved crankcase answer.    It seems plausible since the failures seem to be on 2014 models.   KTM seems to sell inadequately tested designs and let the consumer do the testing.
