Just bought a 2017 ktm 250 sx-f, what torx do I need

Recommended Posts

Don't use torx to vent air side of fork, it will strip the torx head , use the 10mm socket, the only torx I use is the one for the subframe t25 I think

Oops.  Used a torx screwdriver for the first time today.  Not too familiar with these screws / bolts on a KTM.  Tried to remove the air bleeder on the air side of the forks.  Completely stripped it.  OOps!

I just have a cheap harbor freight set that works fine. Most bolts will use a standard 8mm socket.

Torx bits are brittle and while HF has some cheaper but good items torx should not be one of them. Good professional torx bit set is worth  the $$ just like allen wrenches.

If you look at the parts microfiche from KTM closely, you'll notice they provide a lot of information in the part description.  A couple cases in point:

HH COLLAR SCREW M6x25 TX30 :

  • M6 thread with a 25mm length
  • uses 8mm socket, or a T30 torx to tighten/loosen.
  • This is the most common fastener head size on the whole bike.

HH COLLAR SCREW M8x40 TX40 :

  • M8 thread, 40mm length
  • uses a 10mm socket, or a T40 torx bit.
  • Size commonly found on triple clamps or axle pinch bolts.

M8X18 TORX45 :

  • countersunk M8 thread pitch bolt, with 18mm length.
  • Some hardware use a T45 torx bit ONLY.
  • Commonly found on subframe mounts, engine mounts, etc..

HH COLLAR SCREW M10X52 SW13 :

  • M10 thread, 52mm length
  • Uses 13mm socket, or T45 torx bit.
  • Found on the rear shock mounting points.

-----------------

The small screws aren't always listed very accurately in the part descriptions.

  • Fork compression adjuster/AER bleeder screws are usually a T15 torx.
  • Hose clamps use a 6mm socket or flat blade screwdriver
  • Small special screws generally use either a 6 or 8mm socket only.

Hopefully that helps.
