How often do I need to Change the oil in my 250F ?

Recommended Posts

I recently made the big switch from 2 stroke to 4. I bought a YZ 250F from a good friend who broke himself pretty good and decided to sell the bike so that he could heal from a couple of injuries. He gave me a few pointers on what he thought was the right way to go about oil changes. I guess my question is " Is there a set standard or right time to change the oil? " Also...I was a Kawasaki guy prior to buying this Yamaha. I went 2 1/2 years on my KX 125 without blowing a fork seal...the old 250F has already blown one and I have'nt had it quite 4 months yet? Is this a Yamaha problem or rider error?

I'm going to replace my fork seal here at work tomorrow morning. My Lieutenant is experienced at fork seal replacement and this is my first one....so mabye things will go smoothly. If you have any suggestions, or special tricks of the trade, that would be great. I have already printed the instructions off TT that were posted by maintenancefreak. Sounds kinda complicated, but I think we can probably get the job done with little or no problems?! Thanks for your comments on the oil thing....I think mabye I should change that too. I took it out for about the 6th time since I bought it, and rode forever out at Ocotillo Wells on Haloween weekend...all that came to a hault though after I noticed my fork seal was toast.

You can never change the oil too much. Oil is cheap, engines are expensive. I change my oil and filter and every two rides or one race. If that is too much, think about it. $4 for oil and $4 for the filter. For play riding paying $4 per ride for oil is good, $8 for a 60 mile enduro versus many hundreds for a engine rebuild. I would rather ride than work on my bike.

change the oil as often as you change your underwear.

ie. before every race or after 2 practices. often is GOOOOOD.

are you suggesting that you change your underwear before every race or after 2 practices? If so, I have been using the wrong method for years ?. I have been using an "everyday" method. Sometimes more if there's been trouble.

Your the expert but I think I'm going to stick with my method that has been serving me well for years! :D
