07 TTR 230 Rear Spring drop in replacement?

Recommended Posts

I did my sag check and i'm a bit heavy for the bike 230lb.. What i would like to know is there a drop in upgrade compatible shock/spring I could pick off another bike used or can i just replace the spring with an aftermarket.. and if there is what would you suggest and where to buy.

I found this product on TTshop

Race Tech Shock Spring - 5.0 kg/mm (SRSP 552550)

https://www.thumpertalk.com/shop/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=4565236

would it replace my current rear spring and would it be stronger for my weight ride height? 230lbs?

I don't think there are any aftermarket springs that fit the stock shock. You can have a custom one made or use an aftermarket spring with adaptor collars (as I did). The cost was about the same either way but the adaptors (which came from Race Tech) allow for subsequent spring changes.

I think I've heard of people using a standard size spring and accepting the sloppy fit. I don't recommend that.

Go to works performance suspension, they have a chart that shows the over all length of most stock shocks/springs. Look for other bikes with comparable size shocks. As you are awfully big for the bike, I'd look for something longer to make the bike taller. If WP makes 1 for the 230 it would be a huge upgrade. I have their shock (for a XR650L) on my 350 and it's awfully nice. Cannon Race Craft (I think thats the name) will custom make any rate/size spring you need for about $130 if you want to keep the stock shock.

WP makes 3 shocks for the bike, from $450-750. Huge upgrade if you're willling to spend that kind of money on that bike.

The stocker is 15" overall length. the only thing close in Yamaha stuff (wouldn't have to be) is the mid-eighties TT350 at 15.88" Heavier bike would be sprung heavier too if you found a stocker. WOuld raise the seat about an inch. NOT a great shock, but a lot heavier duty setup which fits your weight. You wouild have to check the spring diameter to make sure it would fit in the space that the stocker does and how the ends mount to the bike. The WP shock the mounting 'eye' is narrower than the stocker. I used spacer to take it up. (that's on a Honda XR, not a TTR).

Acutally, I htink the Honda XR650L shock is about 15.5" for the 93-94, and 15.88" for the later years, so those might well work. Again, not anything highly desireable, but made for a heavier bike and springs are readily available for them.

FWIW

That's very cool information, It will be my project to get a bigger spring first than spend 700 on an upgraded shock/spring combo. I will browse the Ebay as well, i just trail ride, kinda new to the whole sport. But I do notice the suspension issue. I can't set the sag properly cause i'm to heavy :( But for what i do for the next month will pretty not be to aggressive. There's a spring company in my area that make all kinds of springs i wonder if they could make one for my bike. I'll keep ya posted WP doesn't list my bike so i have to call them first, but if i can get it made locally i'll try that first.

Thanks for the reply and knowledge!

Hey for just playing around, you'll be fine. We rode for DECADES on old XR/XL's with crappy suspension too soft for our butt without giving it a thought. Nobody but motocrossers cared about suspension back then. LOL

But it CERTAINLY does make it more fun and controllable.

A stock xr650L shock w/spring is likely available for about $50, for 100 you ought to be able to find one with a heavier aftermarket spring to suit your weight. IF it fits (total width of the spring/shock) in the ttr frame space for it. Measure yours and ask sellers to measure theirs. That's less than the cost of a new spring alone and the setup is for a heavier bike, so it fits what you need and isn't available for the ttr and raises the seat a bit for you (more leg room). I've wondered if the ttrs simple shock would be able to control a significantly heavier (stiffer) spring for guys our size. Can't answer that as my son rides it and he's 140lbs. LOL There just doesn't seem to be ANY aftermarket for this bike for some reason, so figuring out OTHER stuff that will work is the only way to improve it. I have 3 Honda XR's and it's the same thing with those. ?

A spring is a spring as long as they use the right stuff in the right dimensions. F

That's a good point, whethere the stock shock can control the spring.. never gave it a thought. I checked out this local spring shop guy, they don't make springs but they say that there could probably match it up with something in there stock piles of coils? So when i get the time i will take the shock out and see what he can offer or match it with, he said it's just fatter spring coils but same height and widtch.. we'll see. I've looked at a few XT600 shocks so i'll weigh the difference when the time comes. I'm in no rush right now, thanks for the options and suggestions i'm trying to figure out another intake popping/backfire issue now -in another post- Thanks
