Engine dies at end of warm up (XR650R)

Recommended Posts

I am having an issue with my XR650R

Bike starts and runs normal. approximately 3 to 4 miles into warm up, it wants to stall.

If it stalls, i can kick it once and restart and all is good. I can restart with the compression release sometimes if I am rolling, it starts and all is good.

I ran into this issue the other day pulling up to a light, I was able to keep the RPMs up and keep it running, the engine seemed to loose power for about 30 seconds but I kept the RPMs up enough to keep it running. The engine ran fine and had full power after the issue

I have no issue after the engine warms up. Idle is always good and power is there,

I am running at 0 to 200 ft elevation, Opened side cover, full Big Gun exhause with quiet core. 68S primary and 175 main jets.

I adjusted the mixture screw and found no change.

Any idea's on what might be going on?

Thanks for the help.

Ken

Im thinking you are having carb float issues like its sticking closed. and your running it dry. or maybe the petcock is not flowing. check your tank for dirt. that or you have a bad ground thats causing an intermittent short. if the tank is clean and you now its flowing start the bike and as its idiling tap the bowl with a screwdriver and if the bike stays idiling there you go.

One more thing is it seems to only do this when it is warm out.

I ride to and from work. Haven't had an issue in the morning. only on the way home in the afternoon.

The bike will do this one time and then it runs fine and I know I can rely on it to run.

I thought about it more and it is around the 2 mile mark with idling at a couple stop lights before it happens.

When I park the bike, I always turn the petcock off and the bike is parked in the shade under a tree at work

I started having the same problem yesterday. My 2002 dyno tuned XR560R ran perfect the day before and the entire ten years prior, then yesterday after a routine oil change it died on warm up and would not restart. This morning it started right up first kick which is normal but then died after warm up and would not restart. I checked the fuel flow from tank first that was good, then I replaced the spark plug "with a used one I had" and it fired right up, I let it run hot and it runs perfect now. That plug was probably 9 years old, my used one is about a year old. I run an Edelbrock pumper carb so didn't think that was the problem. The oil change was just a coincidence of course.

dude a 9 year old plug? maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan

maintenance dudes

its a 3 dolar part that is so fundamental...

change it every 6 months to a year and check how your burning at the same time

Im overly paranoid but I always check my plugs, just to see whats happening...

also if yo ride in rain or muddy conditions etc...the probability of having a seized sparkplug in the head are exponentially higher than if changing regularly

cheers

Back from the dead, but I am having a similar issue. Bike wants to cough then stall when coming to a stop, or when at a stop. not good when riding on the street. This issue seemed to have started after swapping to a fresh spark plug. Why is this?

Bad new sparkplug.  Not the first time I've heard of this or had it happen to me.  Some idiot somewhere drops the box of plugs on the floor and then puts them on the shelf for sale.
