XR200 drum brakes

Recommended Posts

Get the bike up on a bucket or crate. Loosen the wingnut adjuster all the way and pull lever all the way out from the threaded rod. Loosen the axle nut on the left side so that you can take a hammer and tap the snail shaped adjusters on both sides in position to loosen the rear rim and move it forward to loosen the chain and take it off the rear drive sprocket. You should be able to figure it out from there. A $35 manual would save you a lot of time and frustration and well worth it if you plan on doing your own work. You'll make that money back in the first hour you work on your bike.

It looks like the arm (number 9) is missing its bolt, and the cam (number 5) may be cracked. If so the brakes would not function for very long, if at all. Those two parts may be screwed or you may get away with new shoes (number 1).

The work required is very basic, but if you have never done it before I suggest obtaining a manual first, or assistance from someone who knows what they're doing before starting. That will help you decide which parts are good, which are junk, and especially how to re-assemble and set everything up correctly.

If these parts are very badly beat, I would suggest a good look over everything else ASAP.

Hey thanks for the quick reply guys, in the process of getting a manual now for the bike. Will try what you have suggested this weekend and get back to you on my progress. The bike is missing the header pipe aswell lol. But you can never destroy these indestructible beasts haha.

Thanks
