Here's a pic of my collarbone Xray

Recommended Posts

I have been pouting about breaking my collarbone for almost 7 weeks now. Here's a pic at 5 1/2 weeks. I sure wish I could see some bone growing in there, but everyone says thats normal. I feel pretty good, and am planning on an easy ride at the track this weekend.

The two breaks are where it looks like a short bone is sitting behind, but connecting the two bones that should be in line with each other. They are overlapping on the ends a pretty good bit. Put it this way....I'l be able to fit through a little smaller hole now. ? If you look at me really closely, you can see that one shoulder is a little bit lower, and shorter than the other. Its very hard to tell though. The end of the upper part of the bone is leaves a pretty good lump that is easy to see. Not as easy as your AC joint though TFB. How is yours doing anyhow?

My shoulder's pretty good actually, but I went down in practice two weeks ago, and got tweaked a bit. It was kind of weird cause I went down on my opposite shoulder, and it felt like my whole sternum shifted and almost like I cracked the bad shoulder's collarbone. I had trouble breathing and coughing for a while, still do a little. I don't know if having the extra movement in my left collarbone allowed the bones to move more on impact and give me a strained pec, or something similar. Any doctors out there? I thought with over lapping collar bone fractures they pin them together?

Ouch. Maybe the AC joint allowed everything to shift enough to really put a good flexing on the ribcage?

As for overlapping collarbones, I think a lot of it has to do just how bad the overlap is, and where the break is. I read that pinning them is only done 10% of the time or less. I think theyre always pinned when the bone comes through the skin, because everything needs to be cleaned up to prevent infection anyway. Also read that when the break is very close to the shoulder they are frequently pinned, because the bone heals much slower in that area. But it probably has a lot to do with the doctor looking at the Xrays too.

you dont have to pin a clavicle fracture. in some instances you can have surgery which may decrease your downtime, but overall if the two end of the fracture are in the same room they will heal! so dont worry too much and take it easy until it heals completely. wait 3 weeks after the pain goes away before hard riding.

I took the kids to the track and did a VERY easy ride on Saturday. Everything went good. I wanted to go faster, but those XRAYs kept popping up in my head. I hope I see some new bone growing in there in a few weeks when I go back to the doctor for another picture.

I could feel the collarbone for a few hours after the ride, like it was irritated a bit. Nothing bad, actually I think it was the soft tissue rubbing over the ends of the bone that I was feeling, but I'm not sure of this.

I did a couple small jumps, but was very careful. I knew I would be alright, I just could not afford to take any type of fall. I think it will be a couple months before I really get to test out my new suspension. I could tell the rear shock felt better, but wasnt sure about the front. I need more speed to tell anything for sure though.

Davbrucas gives good info, after all, he is almost a doctor...literally! Hang in there bud, after you get to be a famous doc, I can say I know somebody important! ?

I broke my collarbone one week ago. The Dr put me in a sling and said something along the lines of "it is going to hurt a lot for the next 3 weeks or so; come back and see me in 3 weeks; it will be 5-7 weeks after that to start therapy". I'm bummin' pretty hard.

I have approx 20mm of overlap. He said surgery is not indicated; would be basically cosmetic to get rid of the lump and insurance most likely wouldn't pay. I don't want surgery, but I do want it to heal correctly. There are a few pretty depressing stories on the "Health" forum about collarbones not healing. Anybody got a success story to perk me up? How long did it take?

Any thoughts on taking calcium supplements? Any other thoughts on speeding recovery? I was pretty much inactive for a week. Am now going on errands with the wife and went to church and stuff like that. Thinking about riding the recumbant bike trainer in the basement to try to keep cardio fitness up. Perhaps even do some light weights with the left side (broke my right clavicle). Thoughts and suggestions welcome!

I had a bad experience, thought mine would NEVER heal, but alas, it did. Of course, my break took 3+ weeks to fuse properly. Yikes. I had to wear the clavicle strap for 3 weeks because I had ALOT of overlap, @35mm initially, it was reduced to about 10mm. After that i wore a sling for 3 more weeks, after that my shoulder joint was so frozen from lack of motion that that was the hardest part, getting it working again. Therapy? I won't pay for that, I have enough willpower to make myself do the range of motion excersises.

Now the bad part, I was out for SIXTEEN WEEKS because of it. Yeah, I might have been able to get back faster, but I did want to risk a rebreak, so I stayed off until the doc liked what he saw on the x-rays and CT scans. However, the end result is that I was able to get back to the track and ride 2 days in a row the very first weekend back. Other than being sore as hell, the body (and shoulder) felt GREAT.

Take the time to heal right, we are not national champs getting paid...I want to be riding for a long time, and at 33yrs old it just is not worth coming back too soon. I am not afraid of rebreaking it as far as riding hard, but when I DO get hurt, I am going to let it heal properly. ?

What is a "clavicle strap"?

The emergency room folks put me in a thing that goes around my rib cage and looks like it would be for broken ribs except that it has a velcro piece that attachs my arm to my side at the bicep and then another velcro piece that attaches my wrist to my stomach.

The ortho guy gave me a sling.

Neither device seems to do much in terms of reducing the overlap approx 20mm).

I want this to heal quickly and correctly. Is there something I should be wearing instead the rib thing or the sling?

Thanks!
