Axel nut size

Recommended Posts

1 1/16"

Funny you should say that. I know it has to be metric but needed a wrench at a track one day and a guy gave me a sae wrench and I tried it and it worked great but I didn't remember what size it was.

What is the true size of the rear axel nut on a 2009 YZ450F. Owners manual says nothing. I have been using a 32mm socket and it always feels a little loose and now the nut is starting to round off.

I can't tell you if it's a 32 or a 31 but it's definitely not a 1 1/16 (27mm)

That's for a pre-'09 22mm axle. You have the larger 25mm axle that started in '09.

32 is 1 1/4" (1.2598"). Try a 1 3/16" (30.1625 mm)

A 1 3/16" won't work. The nut measures larger than 1 7/32.

I just went out in the garage and tested each. Here are the results from loosest to tightest.

32 12 pt.

32 6 pt.

1 1/4 12 pt.

1 1/4 6pt.

My rec. is to use a 1 1/4 6pt., it was fairly good.

The possibility of a 31mm is still there, however,

that's approx. 1 7/32 and the nut measures larger than that

along with the fact that the 1 1/4 6pt. didn't leave enough room for 1/32 imho.

Another thing, and I don't mean to insult anyone, but I watch guys put large sockets and torque

on a nut by just applying force to one end of the wrench. That cocks the socket and will round off

the nut even if the socket is correct. Applying equal and opposite force at the head keeps the socket flush.

I know most know that but it just had to be said here.

1-1/4 fits perfect for my 09. It's the only size I've used on all my 450/250s that I can remember. I bought the socket just so I could adjust my chains.

That is pretty unusual. My last three bikes have all been different . 07 CRF230F 24mm; 08 YZ250F 27mm; 2010 YZ450F 30mm; Iv'e never seen one as big as 1-1/4 before. I'm not doubting you, just saying that is very uncommon.

Yea, I dunno man. Like I said, I've always used that socket for my bikes. Same as the guy a few comments above, 1-1/4 for the 09. Fits great!
