DRZ high RPM Bog-Hesitation

Recommended Posts

I picked up a used 06 DRZ a few months ago and did a few mods including a JD rejet. I am having an issue with a bog-hesitation only when I try to go above 6000 RPM. When I'm just cruising around with my boy in 2nd or 3rd gear it runs fine but as soon as I hit the street and try to get on it I get the bog. It feels like it is starving for gas or something.

Anyone have any suggestions on what my issue may be?

i have just had agro with high end revs in 4th, 5th gear, have a look in your tank around the inside of the petcock and check for what i had----a load of gunky rust congelead around the petcock which wouldnt help fuel flow.also the red stuff went through to my carb bottom.not good

check out my recent thread to see what i mean about the red stuff

just a thought as cleaning mine and putting in new fuel in helped a heck of alot

Thanks for the reply.

I have an inline fuel filter but it came with my bike, I dont know how old it is. I did find a few other threads with this same topic so I can do some trouble shooting in the next few days.

Just did my jetting a month ago and I know the carb is clean. Also have a clear IMS tank and I can see to the bottom and it is clean.

I'm willing to bet it's not that the engine isn't starving for gas, but just the opposite... too much. If you can, try riding up to the same elevation and when you experience the surging, remove the airbox door and run it again. If the problem goes away, you probably need a smaller main jet.

but is it in the correct position?

I am going to take it apart again this weekend and double check my work. I have 300 miles on it since the rejet and it was running perfect but 95% of those miles I was putting around the desert in 2nd and 3rd gear. I didnt even notice an issue at all until this past weekend in San Felipe when I jumped on the road and opened it up. It also happened while riding on the beach.

I have an tach and it only happens above 6000 rpm under 6 it runs great.

Update-

I started looking into my issue this morning and ended up changing the plug, inline fuel filter and drained the gas out of the tank and carb and put in fresh 91 octane with some sea foam. Rode it around for 15 miles and was still having the same issues.

Then I decided to try to run it with the air filter cover off and that only made it worse and this is when the bulb went off in my head.

I did get a new seat a few weeks ago and I thought maybe if it ran worse with my cover off my new seat is letting in to much air. I put one piece of duct tape over my 3X3 hole and took it on the same 15 mile loop and it ran perfect. Tried it again without the duct tape and the problem came back.

I wouldn't think this would make a difference but it does. Is there a proper way I can fix this with a rejet instead of relying on duct tape or a new airbox?

  • 1 year later...

I know this thread is a year old... but after searching, this was the closest thing I could find to my issue...

I have an 05 DRZ400SM with Akra Pipe/Header, 3x3 and it's been jetted (I bought it used and dont know any more than that)

I have had it for 6 months and put on more than 5K miles without any problems.

Two weekends ago I took it to VIR for my first track day and it ran perfect... I did run her hard.

Well, this past Saturday I went on a ride with a buddy and within 5 mins, I was having bogging issues at constant cruising speed (5th around 6K rpms)

I thought that it was running out of fuel so I pulled in a filled her up, but she had 1/2 a tank.

So, here is a rundown of whats happening:

I am cruising (constant throtle/rpm/speed) at 60mph in 5th at around 6K rpm, it acts like it's running out of gas... bogging down....

If I adjust the throtle slightly (up or down, basically constantly change my speed/rpm) i dont get any hesitation.

And this doesnt happen all the time maybe 25% of the time...

I did open her up a few times and I am only having this issue when the throtle is constant and only in 5th gear (I did try to replicate this in all other gears and no problems)

I read that the jetting might be off but I havent changed anything in the 6 months I have had it.

Any suggestions??

My bike is fixed.....

I am not sure what fixed it but I did the following:

- Ran all the gas our and refilled with 93 (always use 93, if I don't my motor has a loud clicking noise)

- Changed the oil

- Got a suggestion from a member, Noble - he said to reroute the carb vent line out of the wind. I installed a catch can
