oregon dunes

Recommended Posts

Winchester bay is my favorite. It has the biggest dunes but is also the smallest area. Spinreel to Horsefall dunes are the most open (rolling medium dunes) and is the largest and you can ride the beach. Florence is cool too, large area some trails and pretty big dunes. you can also ride the beach there. Just hit em all, they're only 20-30 min apart:thumbsup:

I run a 8 paddle on my 03 cr250.

The above comments are spot on, I have ridden there a lot.

#1 Winchester #2Horsefall/Hauser #3 Florence #4 Spinreel.

If you are going for 3 days, do Winchester, Spinreel and Horsefall, they are close together. Florence is about 20 minutes north on Hwy. 101. Lots of camping in that area, don't worry about reservations this time of year.

Some good information here: http://www.duneguide.com/sand_dune_guide_oregon_dunes.htm

Another vote for Winchester. Half moon campsite is where I usually camp since you can ride out of camp and after a day of riding walk 15 minutes and have a beer on the ocean. good times...

An 8 paddle is what you want but there are alot of opinions on the brands. Regardless of which one you choose you will have a blast.

One thing you should consider is making reservations wherever you want to camp. Alot of people book spots online early in the year and may not even end up going or have a spot per truck. Even if the campsite is empty you can't use it if its reserved. Annoying, but another key reason I like Half moon as its first come.

I really like Florance. Honeyman state park is nice this time of the year because you can ride out of the some campsites. I didn't like Coos Bay at all and I haven't been to Winchester yet. Have fun!

Coos Bay is a town, what dunes are you talking about?-Horsefall is just north of North Bend/Coos Bay.

My bad, I've always called them Florance, Coos Bay and Winchester Bay. We camped out of Spinreel. I just like the bigger dunes of Florance, or at least they seem bigger to me. I didn't like that long road out to, I think its called horsepower hill? I was dieing, that could be because I drank to much the night before though!! Another big thing for me is that Florance is a bit closer to Portland.

I wouldn't feel too bad, I have only been riding there for 20 or so years and still call them Florence, Coos Bay, and Winchester Bay. I'm pretty sure we all knew what you were talking about. I am with you, that Florence is my favorite. Coos Bay is alright, but the hills are smaller and it is so spread out to get between fun stuff and the long woop roads are horrible on anything but a bike. I have been to Winchester bay about 10 times and have never seen the weather nice there. It has been windy and foggy everytime. The dunes at Winchester are cool, but the weather sucks.

I like the whoop road between Spinreel and Horsefall, in fact I think it's called Six Mile Road or something like that for good reason, it's pretty long! Nothing like pinning a bike bike over the whoops for miles to get the heart rate up.

The problem with Horsefall is that it tends to be windier, Spinreel is small but sheltered by trees and hills and yes, unfortunately Winchester gets pretty foggy, especially when it's hot in the valley in the summer. I have often gone from 90+* inland to cold and misty at Winchester. It can be really nice in the spring and fall though, and in milder summer weather it's usually nice. It's certainly the place to go if you like to hillclimb. Florence is kind of a happy meduim of all three, and it is loaded with nice medium size jumps for a bike.

I've been to Winchester once last year around this same time, weather couldn't have been better. Me and some buds are heading back at the end of this month. Last time at Winchester was my first real trip to the dunes, it was hard for me to take it all in because it was so freakin fun.

I've been to Coos (Horsfall) a bunch, I like it there cause I know the place by now. Never been to Florence. I like the trails at Coos and I despise whoop road to the beach.

This is at coos after my bud thought a deep pond wasnt too deep, swamped his bike and was done for the trip.
