getting a crank rebuilt at the dealer?

Recommended Posts

Would you guys trust a dealer to rebuild your crank? Or am i better off sending it to eric gorr or somebody?? My buddy works at the suzuki dealership and says they dont really do any dirt bike cranks but they do a lot of snowmobile cranks which i think are basically the same. What do you guys think?

how much will they charge? if it's reasonable and they stand by their work, then do it

but check around with your local riding community to see where they get it done. There might be a hole-in-the-wall small business, owned by a motorcycle racer that has worked on 2-strokes for 25 years. That guy can either be a man of a few words, or extremely talkative about vintage dirt bikes, but has done cranks a million times and will get the job done right for a reasonable price

I went to three dealers to have crank bearings installed and a crankshaft pushed in and one place gave me a blank stare and the other place kept trying to get out of doing it, and the third place said they'd do it, but the guy answering the phone clearly wasn't sure what to ask his mechanic. The dealers would've charged at least $200 + parts to have it done.

On the other hand, I found a local motorcycle machine shop, and they will rebuild a crank for $60 + parts (usually $100). Talking to the guy, he immediately knew what I was looking to get done, and he's recommended by other motorcycle shops in the area. If I ever need my crankshaft rebuilt, he's the guy I'm having do it for me

if you come across someone on the side...make sure make sure make sure they know what they are doing..my buddy had his bottom end rebuilt by a so called friend that went to mmi and worked at a local shop for a bit...well 2 short rides on the bike and it grenaded big time...bottom end was shot..cylinder was annhilated...and slivers of metal were embedded in the top of the piston...so just watch out man...good luck ?

Unless its a shop that has 4 or 5 cranks sitting around to rebuild, I wouln't mess with them. If they have jobs waiting to be rebuilt, then thats normal work for them. Keep in mind that most shops send cranks out to someone else or do what we do. Slap a new crank in. Less labor to put a new crank in than rebuild an old one.

I wish hot rod cranks was around when I worked in a shop. I would have never pushed a pin out of a crank. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

im not really a fan of hot rods i would rather just keep everything OEM. I will probably just send it out to eric gorr.

been using them for years never had a problem... they are a little lighter and spin up faster Almost every bike I ever owned has a Hotrod Crank in it.

Im just gonna stick with OEM.. ive heard a lot of hot rods horror stories so its just for piece of mind... you really cant go wrong with OEM you know. I wont be bringing my crank to the dealer I will be having it professionally done by forward motion. Does anyone know what they charge to rebuild a crank? I looked on their website and they dont show a price.

It’s been my experience that if someone doesn't list a price up front it is cause they don't want to scare the shit out of you before they talk you into it, ?

Either buy a new OEM crank or buy a Hot-Rods crank dawg, you sure you weren't hearing Wiseco crank horror stories? Cause Wiseco and Hot-Rods are not the same company.
