xr 200 baffle removal? (I am new to this stuff)

Recommended Posts

Forgive me for sounding so ignorant, but I have an xr200r, 2000 which is all stock except I was interested in doing simple mods, such as removing the snorkle/upgrading the filter and maybe removing the baffle and of course jetting it correctly according to whatever i do to it. I bought the bike used and I am not sure how to tell whether or not the baffle has already been removed. I cannot see any thing that is screwed onto the muffler opening or anything like that, so do I need to drill it out or something like that? Sorry if i sound incredibly stupid, I am just new. ?

Here is the muffler schematics. http://shop.thumpertalk.com/oem.asp?partcategory=188228&manufacturer=3&category=3&year=2001&model=4252

From your pic the tail pipe, cap and bolts have been removed. As for jetting go up one on pilot and main. Check your barrel slide in your carb for wear. UNI filter works very well and costs about $30. Also remove the snorkle. You should be good to go.

Pulling the insert increases noise a lot and improves bottom end throttle response a bit but dyno tests show no increase in peak power. Any drilling inside the muffler will defeat the spark arrester which is required for use on public land. Contrary to urban legend and aftermarket exhaust sellers the stock exhaust is very good on a stock or mildly modded engine.

Over the years I've done a ton of side by side drag races with 200s and the stock exhaust performs very good. IMO, with a few exceptions, modding the exhaust does not increase power or require rejetting. The 86-02 XR200s, unlike the CRF150/230, are jetted pretty close from the factory and usually do not need rejetting unless something is drastically different on the engine.

Here is a pic of the insert.

The item on the left is the tip that fit onto the end of the insert.

These parts are the same 84-85 XR200R/250R and 86-02 XR200R.

There are two parts that fit in the air box inlet, Honda call the part with 3 ports a "Duct", and a part with a single port called a called a "Cap" (we call a snorkel). Item 10 and 11 in the pic.

Item 11 (snorkel) fits into the center port of the duct and covers the two side ports. Based on the kind of riding indicated in your pic I recommend keeping the "Duct" in place because it helps to keep water out of the air box and shield the filter from water splash.

The indicator for pilot jet size is how many turns out on the mixture screw. If more than two turns out for a good warm idle then maybe a larger pilot is warranted, the owner's and service manuals have instructions for setting idle mixture. There are two very small low speed discharge ports in the floor of the carb venturi that can become obstructed which causes hard cold starting and poor cold operation, also exhaust popping on decel when warm. I've had to use compressed air from the venturi side to free obstructions.

Similar symptoms can be caused by a low float level.

thanks so much for all the help guys i really appreciate it! however, since i live in a very very spread out environment there is nobody around but me and my friends so there is no issue about me having a loud bike. so how exactly do i go about pulling the insert? from the back? or the front...
