Ok, seriously, how do I clean the carburetor on my 2000 CR250?

Recommended Posts

I've looked at the manual, but Its hard to follow..

I've only had a bike for 2 months, I'm 34 so I know a little bit about machines and how they work, but the carburetor is confusing me.

Anyone know any links or how to pages? I've searched and cant find anything.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

u dont need a manual, just take your time taking it apart, study what u are doing its not that hard. the pilot jet usually needs special attension, the passage for fuel is really small, use carb cleaner, wire brushes, compressed air. u have to be very miticulus when cleaning the carb, u will know why when u see the pilot jet!

+2 on taking your time. Another good idea is to remove the sub-frame first. It makes it a lot easier to get the carb out and keep it clean when putting it back in.

I don't ever use wire brushes to work on the carb, may scratch the surfaces or bore out a jet, so I recommend a tooth brush if something won't clean with carb cleaner/air.

A manual will help you know what all the parts are and how they go back, which is helpful your first time. Reading the manual won't do much good if you've never had it apart, I had to get my hands dirty and see it to understand it.

Other than that, just start taking every little piece of it apart, clean it, and lay it down on a clean towel. Once everything is apart, put it all back together. Another option is to let all the parts soak overnight in a gallon of carb cleaner, but it's more expensive and takes longer. Unless it's really bad, I wouldn't bother.

guess i will just have to take it apart and see what i can do..

honestly, the only reason i want to clean it is because i have no idea the last time it was...i bought the bike a few months ago but i have had no issues with excess smoke or spooge...

Spooge is from jetting issues...what ratio do you run and what type of pre-mix?

Well you are definitely using a good premix. Our bikes come rich from the factory. You won't ruin your engine, but I did drop my main by 6 and my pilot by 4. But it all depends on your weather/altitude/riding type. I was in NC at Fort Bragg for several months training for Afghanistan. I remember it being hot, humid, and sandy. lol

well if your jetting was spot on with the 32-1 mix, it will be off slighty off, the bike will run richer when u lean the oil mix, cause u are using more fuel instead of oil, get it? when i was a begginer i ran 50:1 never had premature problems! the bike was jetted good, 01 cr125r!

good luck
