Fat guy on little bitty 125

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I have been pushing myself to ride a 2002 YZ 250 for a bit now as I am close to the 300lbs mark. I hate that freaking thing, I am not an aggressive pilot, I like things a little slower, but because of my weight I thought I NEEDED a 250 2 stroke. We only ride MX.

So, yesterday, I said screw it and pulled out our 1999 RM 125 to ride at one of my buddies tracks. I figured at least I could run it as it has been sitting for a few months. I checked it over and loaded it up in the truck.

I started it up and let it warm up and took if for a ride around the field at the track, real nice and easy to make sure it was all there still. Not sure if it is the bike or the pipe, but if feels like you need to rev it to the moon to get anything out of it.

So the bike feels nice, really light and quick enough for me. So pull a few wide open runs in the field, the bike is running well. So, let's go try the track....wait a minute... HOLLY hell this is fun!! I can lay it over in the corners and grab a handful of throttle and not worry about looping it out.

I had a smile on my face from ear to ear after the first 1/2 lap until the end of the day from riding myself silly. I was having a blast, being able to be in 100% control of a bike is really invigorating. I was pulling more laps and running faster than I ever had on that damn 250. I am sore as crap today, but cannot wait to ride again.

So, the 250 is now for sale and I am looking for a nice late model 125. I figure I will bore it out to 144 when I get tired of the 125, but for now I will enjoy the smaller bike.

For you other large guys that think you need to get the biggest bike out there, try the mighty little 125 before you make a decision.

you are right man. i weigh in at about 335 lbs. im not a very agressive rider. years ago i started out on an 04 rm125. i miss that bike. it was really easy to throw around and ride. when ever i took a dive it was easy to pick the thing up off of me too, haha. you just reminded me of that thing. i think i will start searching for another one. i always see the 125's on craigslist with prices that seem like they are giving them away.

I have tried a few 250f's and they do not suit my riding style, I love to wring out a bike, that is why I have been working with the two strokes. I would love to find a SX144 that I could afford. I am in the process of losing weight, gone from 315 to 285, and hope to hit 250 by end of summer. By next riding season, I hope to be around 220lbs. I should be much faster on a 125 at 220lbs than at 285lbs. I figure the more I lose, the faster (hp per pound) the bike will get.

Maybe once I get down to the weight I want and get more used to staying upright on the bike, I will look at a 250f or 250s.

Till then, I will get giddy every time I get on my 125!!!!

Too bad you were not closer, I have a mint 03 Ktm 125sx for sale it has the most power in the 125 class. You might consider getting a Ktm150sx.

How much, and how far from Niagara Falls are you? I get down to the Canadian side of the falls once in a while to see my parents. I bought the YZ 250 in the US and would buy another bike there if the price is right.

Either IM me or throw some pictures up in this thread with a price and we can talk.

The only big downside to the 125 is the motor is small and high strung. Its made to compete in a cc limited class so it has compromises. I wonder how long the motor will live working harder with extra weight ? they dont get all that many hours to a top end, especially if you ring them out.

What about just detuning your 250 with a torque pipe, very quiet silencer, reed spacer, and flywheel weight? it would get extra low end grunt and lose the viscous nature making it more fourstroke like. As a big guy myself (240) I like the torque and grunt of the 500s. After a few blown up engines I lost my love of wringing things out though I do admit the light weight and throw aroundableness of the 125s looks awful darn fun. I've got to try it atleast once before I die.

Doesn't KTM make a 125 that is factory punched out to 200? Would be more powerful than any big bore kit and done factory.

wow I am a 125 advocate and weigh 190 myself but damn 285 is pushing it! No doubt it will make you a better rider but I think that may be cruelty to a motorcycle. Maybe a 250F is a good choice, you're still gonna have to wring that at your size so it should be about as fun as a 125.

that KTM 150sx looks pretty bitchin, that's for sure.

Well, Tuesday morning and still sore. I guess that means I am doing something right!!!

I would love to have the skills/conditioning to run a 450, they look like beasts, but I am just getting back into riding after wreaking my shoulder and gaining way to much weight.

As for going through top ends more often because of my weight, I don't mind doing them, 2 hours work with a few beers and I am done. I usually run around 20 hours on the kids bikes per top end. Does anyone have any idea what I should be running on a 125 with 285(300lbs with gear) for rebuilds? I am thinking if I pull it apart at 15 hours and inspect that might be a good starting point. It would take me a long time to put 15 hours on the bike as I can only ride for 10 min at a time as I am so out of shape:moon:

Maybe in a year or two I will upgrade to a bigger bike, but I will always keep the 125 around for the giggle factor. I will try to get some pictures next time we go out so you can see the greatness that is me!!!!

That maintenance schedule seems a little busy for a playbike. But you know more than I do as far as what your weight/style does to your bike. Maybe next time at 20 hrs measure everything and if it lookks good just re-ring it and see how it goes. Do you run cast or forged piston? I run a wiseco(forged) and yeah they are louder and more expensive than OEM but I don't worry about them breaking prematurely.

Agreed, having 125 to beat on now and then is pretty fun!

280 pounds and going on my second year on my 2002 KTM EXC 200. I love this bike! Way better than my heavy 4 stroke 400 that I had before. Light weight makes riding fun. (We ride almost all single track.)

The KTM 200 is the world's greatest dirtbike as far as I'm concerned. My 140 pound son rides the same bike; they last/wear the same (80+ hours on a top-end; rebuilt as preventive maintenance.)

I urge everyone to try a small bore 2 stroke.
