Approx 300 hours, and inside look.

Recommended Posts

AS Racing is doing a full above-the-crank rebuild for me (along with several other 'sweet-jump' goodies).

Here is the update so far:

From Paul's email:

OK, here's what I've found:

Engine looks nice and clean inside, oil changes are paying off.

Small areas of wear on the small end of the rod. not troubling, no rough edges.

Big end of the rod is tight, clearance is .018". spec is between .012" and .030".

Cylinder looks good. has typical wear fore and aft, more wear on the front than rear. Nothing that went through the Nikasil. Will cleanup fine.

Piston is past it's prime. measurement is at 95.85mm. Lowest service limit is 95.87mm. Cannot be reused.

Head has alot of carbon and fuel additive buildup as does top of piston. Plug has a nice color, jetting spot on.

Intake valves are worn. It appears that it has been shimmed before. I thought that it hadn't been, but the shims are 1.70mm right and 1.67mm left. The factory never uses that small of a shim. They had one maybe two shimmings left. The valves are visibly cupped and worn.

Exhaust valves look nasty but still meet spec. Should clean up fine.

your head looks bad!!!! why is it red?

"Head has alot of carbon and fuel additive buildup as does top of piston. Plug has a nice color, jetting spot on".

IMHO that is exactly what color a well jetted motor is supposed to look like. Medium 'chocolate milk'.

I don't think it would look so 'red' in person.

There is no way and I mean no way you could ever expect to get 300 hrs. out of that valve eating monster :banghead: J/K

Just shows what good maintenance schedule will do for you....your gonna love it when that thing is back together there is nothing like the feeling of a fresh motor:ride:

Are you still planning on sticking with OEM intakes?

Krannie - 300 hours is very encouraging. How often do you clean your airfilter? Are you using OEM or aftermarket filters? No-Toil or some other oil? Engine/tranny oil routine?

BTW: that email w/pics from Agent Smith is awesome. I can really appreciate the detail. I know where I'm sending my head (still thinking about that port/polish).

Yeah, just kidding. I meant THREE hours! :banghead:

Seriously, I never felt any issues until about 200 hours, when the power dropped on steep sandy hills, and it took 2.8 seconds to start instead of 1.8.

My hour meter actually fell off at about 250, so I am estimating the last 50 based on 10 rides. It's probably even more than that..........

We are going with Kibblewhite intakes, original Exhausts, with the rest of the valve components being all new.

No radical maintenance routines:

I clean the air filter about every 5-10 hours depending on dust.

Uni filter for the last year or so.

I ripped too many Twin-airs to count. I don't trust them any more.

Stock filter for a clean back-up now and then.

No-toil cleaner and oil.

No-toil filter rim grease (lots).

I've never cleaned out my airbox with anything more than a rag soaked in No-toil oil.

Tranny oil: Honda Red bottle every 3rd ride or so.

Engine oil: Golden Spectro or Honda HP4M every 5-10 hours depending on dust.

After starting, the throttle never gets turned until the bike is warmed up for 2-3 minutes.

Excellent, Krannie! The Kibblewhites will run a very long time. You'll have to worry about piston life much more than intake valve life. My maintenance routine is very similar. I got over 265 hours on the original valves and never shimmed. They finally "zeroed" after a race in moon dust. Funny you should mention warm-up. One of my pet peaves is when people start a 4 stroke and rev the crap out of it when cold. Drives me nuts. I warm up for a couple/few minutes then don't hammer it for a few minutes into the ride.

Yeah, I just love seeing kids in the staging area 'warming up' their bike using their right wrist. I just cringe for that poor motor. Aaaahh!

Krannie, FYI-the Uni and No-toil combo have had some problems in the past. The glue that Uni uses is not compatible with the alcohol No-Toil uses as a carrier. The filter will come apart, as did mine. I contacted Scot of No-toil. Great guy and very friendly and helpful. He sent me some new filters (No-Toil brand) and their new product. Its a water based formula that is compatible with all filters. Its called Evolution and comes in a green bottle instead of the red (alcohol based) bottle.

Ryno

I have heard of this, yet my Uni filter(s) have lasted over two years. When I run out of 'red' I will switch to 'green'.

thanks~!
