yfz 450 header pipe glows red

Recommended Posts

I have been told this is normal but just wanted to confirm it. When my quad is warmed up the header pipe will start glowing red after I ride it for a while and then sit and idle for a little. Then when I ride it again it stops glowing as bad. I have already jetted the carb and it doesnt spit and sputter at all. My buddy has a trx450r and his does the same thing.. but not as bad. Could I still be running lean? i believe my jet combo is a 48 pilot and a 165 main with GYTR exhaust running an open airbox.

thanks for the help

Jason

A 165 main is a little on the lean side, but if the quad doesnt spit or sputter you should be OK.

As was said, the walls on the headpipe are so thin that if you arent moving it doesnt take long for the headpipe to glow cherry red. It freaked me out at first, but everyone Ive talked to said its perfectly normal.

I find that a little hard to believe that a CRF has nothing on you. I have both a 05' CRF and 06' YFZ and unless they both fell off a cliff and you are counting on gravity to help you then I think that might want to rethink that statement or at the very least put someone on the CRF that can ride.

As i have read the forum, i was wondering if the whole pipe glows are is it just red for 6 inches. the 06 yfz that i just bought glows all the way to the exhaust. its not as read after 6 inches but it still glows. i just put a jet kit in which i assume that i am not that lean. Could it be the valve that need to be adjusted? since it is so red. I just have never seen such a hot pipe before.

If it runs OK don't worry.

You can't gauge these things by red pipes - it happens with all of them.

You're not the first one to be horrified by a glowing pipe. They all do it, and mine will glow all the way to the heat sheild if I let it idle for very long. If you're doesn't glow, then I would be concerned.
