Necessary to turn off gas?

I do normally turn it off TBH. I'm used to the occasional stuck float and would rather not risk losing a whole tank of gas on the garage floor.

I turn it off almost all the time. Leaving it open, worst case is the float/carb leaks, runs in the engine and dilutes the oil. Or it just leaks on the ground. Almost nothing positive about leaving a petcock open when not running.

Same here. I had a guy show up to buy a bike from me. He was kicking and kicking but the bike wouldn’t start. I asked him, “did you choke it?” He said yes. I asked him “did you turn the gas on?” He said what? 
I turned the fuel petcock on and boom, the bike fired on the next kick. The buyer said he has never, ever shut the gas off.
