first gear stalling

Recommended Posts

I have a 2005 crf250r. When I start it up in neutral it stalls when put into gear. In order for it not to stall I have to hold the throttle on a little bit while I click down and even then it goes into gear really rough. After I ride for about a half hour it will go into gear without stalling but is still a little rough.

Last time I changed the transmission oil I think that I might have overfilled it too much and a seal might be broken inside the transmission. idk.

I just installed a new clutch lever and it was out of adjustment so I am wondering if it has to do with that?

Can anybody help me?

It sounds more like the cable adjustment. It doesn't really hurt it if you overfill the trans a little. There's a 8mm bolt with an phillips screwdriver slot on the clutch side of the side cover below the waterpump (on the 06 for sure, not sure on the 05). If you take that screw out and stand the bike up straight, it will run out to the correct level. Once it stops put the screw back in and you're good. Nothing is wrong with your clutch. It should change. That's why they make it so easy to adjust.

My 06 does the exact same thing, but I thought they all did that "rev into 1st" type thing.

They really shouldn't unless your inner hub or outer basket is notched pretty bad. Or of course if it's way out of adjustment.

Specifically the stock clutches tend to "fade" more as they warm up. I've seen my kid and others actually adjusting there clutch as they ride with the thumb wheel.

Is there a way to check easily if it's a problem? As my bike warms up, I can shift right into first from neutral without a little throttle.
