1997 spark arrestor exhaust

Recommended Posts

Well today i picked up my first woods bike a 1997 RM125... and i am going to register it in the next couple days but i know that i need to have a spark arrestor on it... on it now is a procircuit pipe and silencer. any ideas on what to go with i don't have much money so if i could just buy a new silencer that would be great but i can only find them as old as 2000 will these fit my bike???

thanks

AP I'm with you, I have never seen nor heard of a fire getting started because of a 2 stroke's exhaust.

The problem is that 4 stroke's are actually classified as "motorcycles" and because of that, we are all lumped together and are therefore forced into buying whatever is needed to make them safe too.

I personally have only been inspected once and that was at a huge organized ride (about 800 bikes). In any case, in Michigan if you do get caught the fines are not for the weak.

I'm ignorant - help me out. Do they check for a "forestry approved" sticker or something on the unit, or do they just put a stick in the exhaust?

The USFS rangers here look for a engraved stamp from the manufacturer. You randomly run into them 50 miles from BFE at popular trail intersections. No stamp, no mercy.?

UA: buy the FMF universal Turbine Core exhaust. One size fits most!

Your OEM silencer is spark arrested for your pleasure however.?

Cool! Thank you! :worthy:

Would I have to rejet? I'm running a PC silencer now.

OEM silencer? What's that? :banghead: That thing went in the garbage right after I got the bike....

You may indeed have to re-jet. FMF S/A cans simply make a bike rich. Try re-packing it with Kellogg's Special K. It will lighten things up and make it flow better.

Seriously though, prolly leaner on the PJ and needle jet but do a plug test/butt dyno run first.

While this is for a drz 400 you can see it on ebay and the spark arrestor is nothing but a screen and I'm sure 'forestry service approved' isn't on there. Is it then 'illegal' or are they just looking for the screen.

I don't know how strict they are out there, but I think it would be much like a cop jamming a pipe down the pipe of a loud harley to see if the baffles are removed.

Stick some steel/aluminum or heavier windowscreen in there and I'd 'think' you'd be fine as long as they can see it.

Of course, this is entirely different if they are not only looking for the screen but also a 'stamp' of 'forestry approved' for noise levels which you wouldn't pass.

This is a NEW Billet Aluminum Exhaust Power Tip that replaces the stock tip on a stock Suzuki muffler.

With this Tip installed it gives you more power by reducing restriction in the stock exhaust by flowing 3 times as much air as the stock tip.

With this tip it also gives your bike a nice throaty sound, and costs hundreds less than buying a whole new pipe.

The Tip comes with a stainless steel spark arrestor screen.

It's not a stick test as earlier noted. I've ridden all sorts of public land where enforcement is routine. It's an engraved stamp on the silencer and it says nothing about noise emissions but it does list the specific model number where the FS ranger can cross reference to a list of approved cans.

Both FMF and Pro Circuit sell quality cans with a Krizzman style arrestor (not a simple screen) that would theoretically prevent a spark from exiting the can. You either comply or you don't. It's that simple.

If you don't want to pay for a spark arrestor, don't ride public land - ever.:banghead::worthy:

You have yet to have one post that tracks back to a somewhat legitimate personal experience on a motorcycle. Do you even own one?????
