Yes BRP means "Big Red Pig" in the XR/XL world. But more literally, BRP = Bombardier Recreational Products. (see BRP dot com) How Bombardier became associated with the big-bore XR's, well... somebody probably knows. Please chime in.

That is a grab strap for passengers and I believe it's removed most often because it looks better off. Maybe an L owner can chime in and give their feedback.

I left mine on - the plastic tab up front just seemed too weak & I didn't want to balance the seat between my legs on a ride home. Most everybody yanks it though.

Removing the seat strap on the 650L saves 10 pounds of unneccessary weight and adds 4 horsepower to the bike instantly. It also reduces the bikes aerodynamic drag coefficient, increasing gas mileage to around 60 mpg. It is by far the best free mod you can do to the bike.

I took mine off because I found it in an uncomfortable location on the seat. I'd either be sitting on it or riding the tank.. Yanked it off there, put the bolts back in and haven't had any issues.
