S to SM speedo calibration?

Recommended Posts

To tell the truth I never paid a whole lot of attention until the other day when I went through one of those auto speed traps. The posted speed was 35 and I was doing 45 according to my converted S to SM. The speed that flashed up was 7 mph slower then what the speedo unit was telling me. To answer your question there are some really nice after market speed-o units out there that use GPS and give not only accurate MPH but also miles traveled. Do a search and see what you come up with.

You just need to replace the black box on the hub. The cable assembly stays as is.

You need to make sure the hubs you order have the speedo drive "prongs" to work correctly. I ordered my RAD hubs with the speedo drive and they work just fine. They came with a different sized seal for the speedo box as the hub diameter is larger than the stock hub.

The gear is all you need. E/S and SM wheels have the same hubs.

Yeah, but what about aftermarket rims? I see the SM pro wheels that Wheeling seels list "DRZ400 Hubs with Speedo Drive" as a feature. Does that mean the other SM wheels people are installing can't run the stock speedo? ?

What about the Talon hubs, do those have the "prongs" to run the DRZ speedo gear??

Some do, some don't. If they do offer the speedo drive you just need to specify if you need the speedo drive or not when ordering your wheelset.

Brands like Marchesinis and Talon both offer the two versions if I remember correctly.

You can get Talon hubs that have the speedo setup machined. Be sure and request that model hub. The Suzuki stock SM speedo drive works. The Talon hubs will also use all the direct bolt on Suzuki sprockets and brake rotors.

How do you guys keep track of PM when your mileage read is off running the wrong speedo drive? What about overall miles when you look to sell? That will be wrong. Or do most folks just not care?

I care! That's why I have the SM speedo box on mine. Though there is still about a 10% optimistic error in the speedo/odo (speedo reads 55, but only going 50 by the GPS). My Suzuki cruiser is off by about the same amount so maybe it's endemic to Suzuki products.

I wish there was a way to cal the speedo.

How much is a speedometer gear for a SM? I have an 07S and have a set of factory SM wheels I want to run. I would be happy with the stock speedo if it was calibrated close with the SM speedo gear.. is this an easy swap out?? If anyone has a part number for this SM speedo gear that would be appreciated.

Wow that ebay auction is at $54, and that's for a used one with $11 shipping, it's cheaper to get a brand new unit from the link posted.

Gotta love ebay and people not knowing what something costs new

  • 8 years later...

This may already be known but I found it on Reddit after a google search.

1) press the SET TRIP button to reset the Trip Meter 2) hold the SET - TIME/TRIP button for 3 seconds 3) use ADJUST buttons to select desired coefficient 4) press SET - TIME/TRIP to save

I guess the coefficient can be found by trial an error. The smaller the number the slower it reads.
