Moab Camping

Recommended Posts

Looked through the info and have not found exactly what I'm looking for. Going to the Swell and Moab next week. I have been to Moab several times but stayed in hotels. This time will be camping in a trailer. Wanting to find a place close to some of the trails cause the bikes are not plated and prefer the non-camp ground type of camping. Anyone have any good suggestions? Thanks in advance

At the foot of Gemini Bridges you have access to metal masher, bull canyon , metal masher, golden spike , gold bAr and poison spider. About a mile up the road on the E side is Klondike, Sovereign area. A few more miles N on the W side is Monitor, Merrimac, 7 mile wash area.

On the S side of the river you can access Kane, Pritchette, Behind the rocks area. You might have to pay here but you'll be right on the river.

For $10 you can take a whole MH and a trailer full of bikes in the sand flats area and catch SR, Hells revenge, Fins, and Porcupine.

Just tryin to be helpful and I've only been there twice so I'm sure I missed a lot of trails and camp spots.

Have fun.

An alternative is the Big Mesa camp area. Its BLM land north of town. If I remember right, you take 313 west. When you are coming south on 191 from I70, 313 ( if that's really it) is about 10-11 miles north of town. It starts across the road from the gas station with camping cabins, showers etc.

Take 313 up to the top of the mesa (lots of twists and turns) then just a mile or two after you are on top, you'll see some camping signs on the north side of the road. Turn in and the dirt road to Big Mesa is marked. This is unimproved camping, but you are not far from that gas station/campground and town. You can ride to Gemini with a short strech on the paved road and there are numerous free riding, sand wash, jeep road opportunities for many miles in all directions from Big Mesa.

Tombstone rock! Great place! Just do a search on how to get there, its well know but hardly used!

It's possible for the road from dubinky well road to tombstone to get pretty jacked up in the spring, but It's a good location otherwise.

I often camp at big mesa. Note that a motivated person with decent sense of direction can get to Gemini Bridges area from there without riding the pavement.

Big Mesa allows easy access to all the Northside trails (sovereign, gemini, gold bar rim, monitor/merrimac, bartlett and even white wash and 10-mile wash). My other choice for a few days is Sand Flats, which allows easy access to porc rim, slickrock, fins n things and a few others, but you have to trailer to other southside spots like flat pass, kane creek, pritchett, etc...

I will second my opinion for Big Mesa... FREE... and lots of places to stay. Thats usually where I stay.
