Bought Another DRZ400 rode home and no oil?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I picked up another DRZ400E today for a whopping $1000. I checked the oil at the sellers place, rode it home, and checked the oil again and it doesn't read on the stick now. There is no leaks that i can see of and it doesn't smoke at all. I got decent deal even if it needs a rebuild since is supposable has a 440 kit, full yosh, Desert tank, ect. Any ideas. Thanks

I added oil. A hole quart! I check the drain plugs, no leaks anywere. I rode this no more then 10 miles and there is no smoke at all when running. Any ideas. Thanks

So I'm assuming it's full now? The only thing I can think of is that you made a mistake thinking it was full before you rode it out.:excuseme: Maybe others have ideas... never heard that one before.

Maybe it is blowing out of the crankcase breather hose???? or

I read in the manual that the oil drains down in the crankcase if it sits too long and you have to start it to check it. Maybe the valve that holds the oil in the frame has been worn out and it goes into the crankcase instead of staying in the top of the frame.

You cannot check the oil when the engine is cold and get an accurate reading. You can only pull the oil galley bolt at the bottom of the clutch cover momentarily to see if oil runs out.If it does then it is safe to run. That's pretty much all you can do when the engine is cold.

The best time to check the oil level is when the engine is hot.Like immediately after a good ride of several miles. That's when I check mine, just after a ride.Let the bike sit on level ground after shutting the motor off for 3 or 4 minutes.Prop the bike up nice and level and unscrew the dipstick and wipe it off.Reinsert the dipstick until it just contacts the threads and withdraw it and take a reading. It should read somewhere on the stick. On a fresh oil change it should read at or near the full mark.

has anyone ever read their manual? to get an "accurate" reading you gotta follow the procedure that suzuki recomends, kind of a piss poor and inaccurate way of checking oil but this is how they say to do it.

(can only be done on a cold bike)

start it up and let idle for 3 minutes, pull out the dipstick and wipeclean, then stick it back in but DO NOT thread it in, you let the threads rest on the lip ehere it threads into, and pull back out and check... hope this helps

The procedure is performed correctly when the engine is hot,not cold. You have to remember the DRZ has a DRY sump.It is not checked in the same way as a wet sump type. You have to understand how the oil system works to know how to check it right.
