Top (comfortable) cruising for KLX250

Recommended Posts

I got my KLX250S in February...the fastest I've had it going was about 110km/hr or roughly 65 mph...it really seems to prefer a slightly lower speed avg 80km/hr or 50mph..that's where I feel most comfortable running it...it doesn't want to hold its speed on any sort of incline either..I might get 80km tops. I dont know what difference a jet kit, aftermarket exhaust or altered air intake would do...or even a different sprocket set-up, but I intend on making some changes in the near future...just not sure what. Hope that helps.

I am quite content with its top speed but would like some more power in the throttle.

Thanks for the posts guys.

Thinking of a dual porpoise bike. Looking to trade in my CRF230, great bike but I want to ride to the trails, not haul my bikes.

Need a bike 200-400 cc that will do 100 KPM comfortably for a few hours.

Your posts were very informative.

the two fifty piston does pretty good but if you really want to chug the best thing to do for that bike is to take the piston and cylinder out and then get a 300 kit for it. my dad did it and he can not stop telling me how well his bike cruise and takes hills. it is a great size. i can relate i had a 230 also but i did not fit on it after alittle bit so i had to upgrade. good luck on you choice. you can also look into XR400 they do really good dual sported.

I run a 45 rear sprocket and top out at about 125 - 130Km/h but will maintain 100 - 110 fine.

Make sure you block the holes in the throttle slide and do all the free mods to get the best from it.

that thing shakes like shakira when u hit 70!!!!

Hmmmmm....that doesn't necessarily sound bad to me. ?

The KLX is too small for me to do any sustained highway (above 45-50) riding for me. Makes me nervous. But that's just me. Obviously it will go that fast.

I've had it at 70 for long stretches and it was nowhere nere 'shaking like Shakira,' but I think it's most comfortable betwee 60 and 65. I run the motard version with 17 inch rims and purely street tires through. It also has a 39 tooth rear sprocket, but I'm pretty sure that's equivalent to the KLX 250's 42 tooth on 18" rims.

Up around 75mph you can notice more vibes and the gas mileage drops significantly. My range dropped by about 30 miles! It's not something I do every day. I was just in a race with a storm and impending nightfall. ?

I use mine for the occasional ride to work when I dont have anything to bring in and want to play around on some side roads/trails on the way home. On the freeway it will cruise at 65-70 but I stay in the right hand lane. Mine seems to prefer the side roads and 55-60 which is fine with me.

now why would you block the holes in the throttle slide????It won't vent and move fast enough then.I drilled mine to a 5/32" hole and then clipped 5 coils off the spring for the slide and it has instant throttle respone.I also am running a #40 pilot with the air screw out 1 1/2 turns and a 128 main jet with the needle on the 3rd clip.It wheelies good and has plenty of power.I just don't know how you "blocked " the slide holes and have it run good....it defies logic as it can't vent the pressure when it opens under WOT.
