XR400 taillight/LED mod.....can it be done?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm setting up my '03 for the street(installed GP110's today),and would like to modify the OEM taillight for the req'd brake light feature(and retain the stock

looks). Has anyone done this? If so,please share your info.(I'll need a pressure switch & fitting for the rear M/cylinder).

If this isn't possible,I'm betting that the stock stator will surely support the addition of another regular bulb. No turn signals are req'd here in IN,but I'll add a small 12v horn as well.

All input from other XR owners having done this will be helpful....

Thanks,

Sam in IN

UPDATE- I've just inspected the tail lamp, and found that it is the Euro/Japan unit that has a dual filiment (21w/5w bulb) instead of the USA single filiment 10w bulb- Don't know why,but Yaaaa!!!!

Now I need to source the pressure switch that will work with the Nissin M/cylinder.......I'll bet one of the Honda sportbikes will have just what I need...

I have modified two XR tail lights into brake light/tail light combinations with parts from Baja Designs. They have both the brake pressure switch and the different bulb socket for the two filament bulb. I think Wheeling Cycle Supply has the switches and bulb sockets as well as a LED brake light/tail light that fits inside the stock light assembly.

Yep, that's the one I'm thinking of. I've never tried polishing plastic (at least not a lens), got a polish reccomendation?

Names escape me but every hardware store will have at least one. (Novvus or similar is one brand)

Some are a 2 step product, like a polish/wax kind of thing on paint. If your lens is real hazy get both, if it's newer and clean just get the 'finish' product.

Difference is amazing. Most show cars you see have it done. It looks great, but the fringe benefit for those running fringe lights, is it lets the tailight show up a lot brighter. Everyone running on the street ought to do it IMO. :applause:

The rear tail light should have a dual filament bulb. There is even a place in the bulb socket for a second wire. I soldered in a second wire then added the pressure switch. Easy money. I would recommend upgrading the output of your stator but that may be a different thread.:applause:
