Brush On Bed Liner?? Do it Yourself vs. Taking it in

Recommended Posts

So my GF is ready to get a bed liner for her pickup... and she wants a spray on type. We looked into it, and the local Rhino dealer (which is not all that local - 45 mins away) wants 400 bucks. I looked into the roll/brush on types sold at local automotive stores, and they want 89 bucks for the whole kit. Now I figure the store bought stuff should work just fine, and will save her 300 bucks. She doesnt haul any other cargo besides the bikes in the back, and she just wants it to look nice, and not show damage. I just want it so the bikes dont slide around when im loading/unloading them. So I figure that the store bought stuff should do the trick, as long as its not a PITA to put on. Anyone have any experience with this stuff, or the spray on style?? Am I wasting my time/money doin it myself, or should it suffice?? Thanks for any Info, or Help! ?

A buddy of mine did it to his crew cab Chevy. It has held up great, I don’t know what brand he used though. He said it took a little time to do because he had to lightly sand the bed down first, but he has been real happy with it.

I have no experiance in applying this but do know my buddy's truck was done By him with that crap and after 1 winter you could Chip the crap with your fingernail, as it would come up in 3 to 4" inchs of material at a time.

but then again he probibly drank to much and didnt follow instructions

That sucks, maybe he didn’t prep it right. My buddy did it 2-3 years ago and he hauls his bikes in the back, and firewood. He has not had a problem yet.

My buddy did the brush on and it turned out bad. It looked bad and within 6 months it was peeling. It doesnt protect as well as the spray in.

I personally would just get a regular slide in bedliner with a rubber bed mat.

These offer better protection from dings and dents than the spray in do.

Take it in. I used the Herculiner product and within a year looked like crap, shortly after it started peeling. Now it's just flat out ugly.

This is after a FULL day of sanding the bed down, NO clearcoat left and down to metal in most areas. Now this is in Phoenix (state of the blazing sun), so maybe be differant for others but I say NEY.

I believe I would let the Pros do it right the first time. Thats a lot of prep work.

I have an '83 chev p/u that was repainted about 5 years ago and the bed looks kinda crappy as it wasn't repainted. I am considering having it lined.

Call me crazy but I want to put liner up on top of the cab where the paint is starting to blister off. They can do a color match and I think it will look ok and solve that problem also. Sound feasable?

I had mine done by Rhino or someone like that. I lived right around the corner from store. It only took them 1/2 day to finish the job. They warranty the application for as long as I own the truck against anything short of a puncture in the bed. I figured let the pros do it, and if something goes wrong let them fix it for free...

The Herculiner is the only product i've found so far that you can do yourself. From the comments above, im feeling kinda iffy :worthy: about that product. It just such a difference in price, that its seems like its almost worth the try. The weather out here is usually nice, we ride in the desert, were it can get pretty toasty, but the truck will never see snow. I just dont want the stuff cracking and peeling just from loading up dirtbikes. I guess worse case scenario if it starts to get screwed up is to apply another coat, or take it in to the pros :ride: Maybe by the time is starts to crack, or peel we will have more $$ to get the spray on.

Thanks for all the input... Keep it commin!!?

I did the entire interior of my CJ Jeep back in 1999 with something that I bought from JC Whitney. I had to spread it pretty thin because I was covering an area a bit larger than the cans were intended for. Then I applied the two specifically different coatings in the wrong order by mistake.

What I ended up with looks like gray 10 grit sandpaper. On the other hand it has held up well and definitely has a different look and texture than anything I've ever seen. Things don't slide around at all.

I now strongly advise against drinking before or during the application.

Its all in the prep work.. If you dont know how to properly prep or dont properly prep its gonna turn out like crap. If your unsure drive the 45 min take your g/f to lunch/shopping come back and walla presto done! ?

The DIY stuff is ok for a old beater truck you dont care what it looks like (or inside a trailer/offroad vehicle as others have mentioned)

but for something newer that you want to look good, go LineX. It'll last YEARS without problems and look great. The DIY stuff chips and needs to be redone every year or 2.

Yea If we go the Spray On route... it will def. be Line X. I've actually used the Brush On stuff on the interior of my buddies 70 something Blazer convertible, and thought it turned out pretty good, thats why i figured it would be ok for the bed, guess I was wrong ?

the trick to doing it yourself, is proper prep. i have done a couple beds for friends and family. the secret is, you need to grind the paint off the bed. get it down to bare metal then paint it on. it should last forever.?

Grind the paint off? :worthy:

First of all thats a shitload of work to save a couple hundred bucks, second you're just askin for that to rust out in about 5 years. No way I'd grind the paint clean off a truck I liked.

Go to bedliner.com and check them out. I just had my Dodge sprayed with this "Superliner", as they call it. They can color match and it looks great. Not supposed to fade like Line-x and Rhino. I just hauled 2,000 lbs of gravel and pushed it out with a shovel, rinsed it out with a hose and it still looks brand new. Cheaper than Line-x too!
