250 wont start

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have already made a post about this, got some helpful advice and worked through that. Here is the link for more info. https://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4380347#post4380347

I cleaned the carb out fully, and put it all back together properly. The bike still won't start, though it cranks over readily and has good spark. What should I check next?

If you want anymore info I can get it quickly.

Thanks,

Kevin

I've tried turning up the idle, and then tried with throttle, no go.

I tried spraying straight gas in the intake, and it didnt even sputter. No life at all.

What kind of electrical problem could I have if it still sparks well?

If it sparks, its not electrical.

I really think you have a fuel delivery problem. Does your gas cap vent properly?

When my bike was new, the fitting on the gas cap vent hose that says "tank" was pointing in the wrong direction. After a fillup the bike would only run about 15 miles before it would cough and die. It wouldn't start again until I'd take the gas cap off and let the tank vent. Before I realized what was wrong with it I was about ready to push it down a cliff.

hmm, ill take the cap off tomorrow and try it again.

I know Im getting gas to the carb, cause if i back off the drain screw it pours out.

Could it be something physically wrong inside? It was out of oil and I didnt realize till after i started it, let it idle to warm up and then rode for a couple seconds.

If you are getting a good spark then it's probably fuel delivery like Jsan says.

But I would try the starting fluid. You may be flooding it by putting straight fuel into the intake. If you can't get it to kick with the starting fluid then there is something else wrong. In your previous thread you said you put in a new spark plug. What about a fresh battery. I have had a 250 be a hard starter because it had a tired battery. With a fresh charge on the battery, it would turn the engine over but just wouldn't turn the engine over well enough to get it to start. If you ran the engine without oil maybe you cooked the valves? Kinda out of my league there but the manual states that head problems, head gasket, etc are part of the "starting problem" troubleshooting path. Good luck.

Even with gas in the carb bowl, the gas tank cap could be creating enough of a vacuum to keep the gas from getting pulled up through the jets.

OK, well, I tried what I could, I don't have any starting fluid lying around, but I think it is something more than that. I am taking it into the shop this morning, I have a very helpful and knowledgable dealer around here, so hopefully this won't get expensive.

AAARRGHH!

Well, I couldn't get it in to the shop yet, so I did some more tinkering. It sounds like it wants to start sooo bad. It fires but really weakly, and won't keep going without the starter turning it over. It just kind of limps along not quite running for a bit and then dies, and if I keep cranking her it'll do it again in a bit. I wish I had some starting fluid, I'm sure that would get it going. Once it fires it should get all the gunk out and be back to normal right?

  • 2 years later...

I'm having the same problem with my 2000 ttr 250. It started a few days ago, and now it will not start at all. I put the 140 jet in there but the bottom of the jet hit the float bowl, so i ground 1mm off the jet and it fits fine now. What gives?

if it hit the bottom of the bowl, you put the wrong one in...

as for it not running well...i dont know...what else did you do to your bike?

is the motor turning over but just not sparking?
