Cost to true a wheel?

The cost to true a wheel is about $6.99 (the price of a spoke wrench). Seriously, this is an easy thing to do. Now lacing a wheel is another matter entirely, but getting a wheel true is easy. Since this is a dirtbike and you are not going to be riding down the freeway at 80 mph, it does not have to be perfect. Any bicycle or motorcycle repair book should have basic info on how to true a wheel. If you have can't find anything, PM me.

Put the bike on a stand.....put a pointer of some sort next to the rim, to give you a reference point..you will see where your hi and low...mark the low area with a marker, slowly tightening the spokes in the low area pulling the rim higher..Check the tightness of the spokes in the low area, they may need to be loosened..After some adjusting, youll understand how it works..give it a shot , its real easy..the spokes come off the rim at an angle,one side pulling one way ,the other side pulling the other way..become one with your wheel.:applause:

If your buying a new rim and spokes...get a prowheel and mail them your hub. They'll lace and true a wheel for $30.

I had a local shop do it and they told me it would be under a $100. The bastards charged me $99.99 for one stinking wheel. They did get is more percise than I could ever do on my own.

If you want to do it yourself for pretty much free, PM me. I have some good PDF files that tell you how to lace and true a rim. I also made a pretty good stand for truing the rim that involves stuff around the garage.

Lacing was easy, once I found the pattern it was just line up the holes and push em through. Truing it from scratch took about an hour to hour and a half and it was perfect, no up down or side to side deviation. Once you read the PDF it's simple. It tells you which nipples to tighten to move the rim which way etc.

Don't be afraid to do this yourself, really easy.

I once read a website that said that wheel lacing and truing was something that caused most riders to go running for the hills, even though it is a fairly simple thing to do.

Do you have?

a) Around 3 hours of time

:applause: Two axle stands, a table and duct tape

c) 6" long pieces of wood and a paper clip

d) A spoke wrench

e) Ability to read and have a tiny clue about what the writer is saying (plain english)

If you have all of the above, you should have no problem lacing and truing up a wheel. As long as you can be patient and repair each little fault as they arrive you should have a completely true rim in no time.

Really, there is no need to spend the extra money to go to your mechanic to do this. Take a risk and jump into it, even if you fail miserably and cant get it running true. At least you tried and you can bring it to your local mechanic with a pre-laced up rim with part of the job already finished!
