Is the KX250F the bike for me?

Recommended Posts

First off let me start by saying I'm an absolute beginner to dirt bikes.

My sons have a Honda CRF150F, XR80 and a Yamaha TTR125.

They too are beginners.

I'm looking for a bike to go hill climbing and trail riding with my sons.

Nothing too too fast and powerful like a 2 stroke but just right.

I'm 38yrs old. 6'1 265lbs. Planning to loose weight:)

Will this bike fit the bill or should I look elsewhere?

Anyone that can help I will very much appreciate it.

It is a great bike however for your size if you are looking at a full on MX bike the 450 would better suit you. The 250Fs are sprung for around a 140 -160 lb rider. You will have to go really heavy on the springs. This bike has a lot of punch, the 450s even more. It looks like your kids are all on trail bikes and you are looking for somthing to trail ride along with them. You said you do not want anything to fast and powerful as a 2 stroke, if that is the case the KX250F or 450F will not be the bike for you. As far as torque and HP there is a little more in these bikes than a 2 stroke motocrosser in the same class.

Being an absolute begineer you may find these bikes to be a handfull.

I would suggest that if you are looking for a trail bike to look at the KLX from kawi, the CRF from Honda or the WR from Yamaha. These are all good bikes but are geared and set up more for a trail rider. I thing you may find these better suited for you than a full blown MX model

i would get the 450f..Villopoto wins b/c his good, its mostly about the rider, i was reading about him, ans he was asked wat he did for fun, and he said, was riding. and he mentioned that all he does is practice and even more practice..his bike is sweeet especially the suspension, but all that stuff can go only so far..

the 250 is a good place to start for several reasons. Your boys will be moving up soon enough and they could transition into the bike. IF you get a 450 it will scare you to death or you will hurt yourself, even at 265 the 450 are monsters for most riders especially a novice. The 250's are light, easy to ride and at your riding level shouldn't require alot of upkeep as you will not be twisting the throttle, thus not taxing the engine. For a vet or beginner any of the 250f's are great. Don't let yourself get talked into a dangerous situation by someone talking through their johnson. It will be years before you can ride at a level where you would need more than 35-40 hp. One thing I do suggest though, as soon as you get your bike, do yourself a favor and get it resprung. The bike from the factory is set up for 170lb novice to intermediate rider. At 265 you will need to take it somewhere and get it set up for your weight and skill. Keep the stock springs for when the boys come up.

as far as the crf250x or the wr250f any of the bikes will work very good as long as you set up the suspension. They all put out about the same amount of hp. The difference is how they put it out. Some have more bottom some have more top end, some produce in the middle. Ask yourself where you think you will be riding in a year, are there alot of tracks in the area, will I be on trails 90% of the time, and buy a bike that will help you get there with out getting you stuffed in a helicopter or ambulance. All of the Japaneese bikes work great for beginners. Be carefull buying a used bike though if you are really new or don't know what to look for as they can be very expensive to repair or rebuild.

I dont know.Your a little heavy for 250f.What about a 450f they have more usable power. You can lug em more. The 250f have about a 200lb max before changing springs.Just something to think about........

totally wrong. A 250f for a biginner trail rider hillclimber will be perfect if not overkill. Hes not an A class MX racer.

My son who is 6'2" and around 230 lbs just bought an '07 KX250F and we are doing a few mods to make it more trail friendly. It has tons of speed and power but struggles on the low end stuff such as steep hills or muddy/rough trails. We are going to start with a larger rear sprocket and see how that works out. I have a WR250F 2006 which is great for the trails.

Some one mentioned a 450f just because of weight. The 450's are powerful. I weigh 120 and the front end came up basically when I was in neutral. If you are a beginner, try bumming a 250f off a buddy or friend. I've seen people go right to a 450f and they turned out horrible. They say that they can't handle the bike even after 2 years on it. Before you go out and buy a 250f I'd say go try one out, and try a 450f. The 250f would last you a while, and you kids will be bugging you for it. So if you get a 250f....ride it for a year....and get a 450f...it wouldn't be too much of a waste....so...lucky kids....im on a Xr100

my bros gettin into dirtbikes and wants a kx250f hes 5'6 120 poundsnever been on a dirtbike before shud he get it?

I would say get him a 150r first, let him get used to that. He'll probably have that for a few months. Then once he gets a lil taller and more experienced get him the 250f.

I was a complete novice 6 months ago and started off with a KDX 200 which used to throw me off all the time.........i loved the look of the 2008 KXF250 and thought bugger it,i don't care what my riding level is i'm getting one.Tell you what..............best thing i ever did,way more rider friendly than the KDX........it gets up muddy hills with ease and engine brakes nicely coming down,it's light and agile and makes me feel more confidant....i weigh about 220 and have no dramas.I got it for trail riding but have recently started goin round MX tracks(in the novice group) and the bike still feels great..........so i say go for it mate, you won't regret it.........P.S i was 38 when i started and now wish i had of got into it 20 years ago...........

My advise is as a begginer DON'T get a 450!!! You will end up hurt. Most guys shouldn't be on 450's anyway even really decent riders. They are an accident waiting to happen for most guys. I had a 450 for a while and all it did for me was make me slower and get me hurt. Now that I am back to the 250f I am faster and safer and I think it's more fun to ride as well.

I totally disagree with this statement.

Engine size has nothing to do with how often you crash.

I can ride a 250f and crash more because I dont have as much power. It all depends on the situation.

I beg to differ. A 450 in the hands of a begginer is a recipe for disaster. All it takes is an accidental crack of the throttle by a tired throttle wrist for things to get out of hand real quick. I agree it might not have as much to do with how much you crash, just the severity of the crashes are often a lot worse with the 450s because they have more power than most guys can handle
