Replacing valves and Timing Chain on KTM 525 exc.

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else find it annoying when someone just posts a link to ktm talk instead of helping out the poster. I f I were doing my valve I would look at the guides, seats, replace valves. Look closely at cam amd followers, cam bearings, timing chain and tensioner. Also have the valve springs tested.

The valves will "tulip" rapidly, mostly the intakes. They will probably need replacement. The valve guides MAY need replacement.

Most recommend replacing the cam bearings and the water pump seal.

It is unlikely that you will need to do anything to the cam chain tensioner or the cam chain. There is a procedure in the manual that will tell you if you need to replace the cam chain. KTM makes a cam chain tool that you will need to install the replacement link on the cam chain when you reassemble.

It is not too much more effort to pull the cylinder and check/replace the rings. Warning, the rear 8mm bolt above the starter doesn't come out unless you pull the starter motor. If you try to shortcut it and NOT take the starter off, it is prone to falling into the bottom end when you take the cylinder off.

I think the KTMTALK referral was warranted, there is a guy there named DJH that does head work, worn seats and guide replacement takes someone with experience, send the head to DJH and get it done right.

There also is a way bigger contingency of KTM riders there that are inately knowledgable about the KTM and what other parts might be prone to fail.

Take for instance that the two valve cover bolts nearest the head bleeder are prone to snap off and should be updated, there are updated parts for the seals, there are tricks and tips in the tricks and tips section for removing the valves, working on the chain, rivet tools, etc..... it's endless.

Also the bolt for the cam gear decompressor comes off and jamms the chain so locktite it if you do anything there. The valve adjustment nuts are prone to come off and do the same sort of damage so snug them up correctly.

I had a load of burnt aluminum on my cylinder, a fast hone with muriatic acid then plunge into a rinse bucket took care of that, then honed with light oil and put a size 2 piston in after some careful measurements. The number you have now is stamped on the piston.

Buy a new flywheel bolt, don't resuse it. Buy one or two exhaust springs just in case. Buy some copper RTV to seal the header.

plus you cant search and use ktmtalk without registering and I applied multiple times over the years with no luck and no one ever responding to my attempts, its a shame cause looks like a wealth of KTM knowledge but I'm not allow in for some reason

The original post was from 2006. But....with KTMTalk.com if you make a post, be sure to check the box for instant email replies. I for whatever reason have to do that everytime otherwise i don't get the replies. I have to then log back in and check. Not a big deal.
I like KTMTalk because there is no BS where there sometimes is on TT. But i will post on both areas sometimes. I like the Facbook group KTM Husky EXC or whatever it is called. Mike Spurgin / Taco Moto and a few others are admins.
If you are not allowed in for whatever reason on KTMTalk then you are doing something wrong.
