TE-510 - 2005 or 2006?

Recommended Posts

What are the major changes between 2005 and 2006 for the TE-510? Any reason to favor one over the other? I'm considering replacing my DR-Z400E.

I mainly do offroad riding, but would like to take some dual sporting trips too. I always feel like I need another gear on the pavement with the DRZ geared like I have it - rattles my bones to hold 65 very long...

The 06 TEs are factory street legal and the 05s are not.

You'll find the Husky's dirt performance far exceeds your DRZ, adjusting for rider ability of course. Stronger motor, better suspension, lighter, etc......Husky performance is amazing. But it won't give you that extra gear you seem to want for highway cruising. The TEs have a close ratio gearbox. That is ideal for trail riding, but like your DRZ they do buzz at 65+mph. Top speed is probably 85mph, so it can handle the road, but that is not the bike's comfort zone.

I also have a 2000 DRZ-400E. It tops out at around 83 MPH per the GPS into the rev limiter. Like you I don't care to ride it for any length of time at over 65 MPH.

It has a Yosh full system exhaust and has the air box snorkel removed and is re jetted. When doing roll-ons with other friends who have 400 to 450 class bikes it does quite well - even against a CRF-450x that's had the same level of mods. It pulls the average Honda 600 or 650 up past 65 MPH or so.

But out riding the trails the Honda CRF-450x is way lighter and nimble and ultimately riding around with a friend who has had one for the past year convinced me to start looking around for a new bike. The CRF-450x was a strong contender as my friend had no problems getting his plated.

But after doing the Big Bear Trail Riders event last weekend I got the upgrade fever bad. Looking around I decided it would be either a KTM, Husky, or the 450x. Seeing that the TE510 got the DS of the year from cycle world and that the KTM's seem to difficult to plate in CA (and I just don't really like the orange) I decided that maybe the TE510 would be the way to go.

I picked up one used on Wednesday from someone on this forum and went for my first ride yesterday - mostly street with just a little dirt thrown in. Not enough dirt yet to have an impression about how it handles compared to my DRZ, maybe today or tomorrow I can get out again.

This TE510 has all the mods done to remove the throttle stop, re jet, new slip-on, bla bla bla.

Ohhh my-god!!! It has way way more power output than my DRZ, or at least feels that way. One of the complaints I had with the DRZ was that it was kind of heavy and I had trouble wheelieing over ruts and other obstacles that you'd normally like to do - mostly it would just spin the tire. I've been riding for close to 40 years and this the first bike that I've almost looped. The first time I really whacked open the throttle the front end came up so fast and so high that I thought I was going to have to hit the rear brake! Those ruts won't be a problem any more . . .

Just riding around I found that I was able to wheelie the bike in 4th gear pretty easily and did a number of 6th gear wheelies over little crests in the road. The 6-speed gear box is much closer ratio than the DRZ and from 1st to 4th isn't as large of a ratio span as on the DRZ.

The bike has quite a bit more buzz and vibration than the DRZ, not a bad vibration like something's coming a part, just more natural vibes. Standing up on the pegs and riding I found that me feet where tingling - something I never noticed on the DRZ.

The bike is also a few inches taller than the DRZ in the seat and doing a U-turn in the trail where it sloped away from my inside leg was a little more trouble than it would have been on the DRZ. For reference, I am just under 6' with a 33" inseam and I could touch flat footed on both sides with the DRZ and with the TE510 I have to tiptoe a little - I feel like I'm 14 again ;-)

Bottom line, upgrading from a DRZ you'll be quite pleased with the TE510 I think.

Regards,

Daryl

The 05 has almost all that same stuff except for: hand guards, new digital instruments, wider triple clamps, larger valves, 50mm Zokes and some other stuff.

I just realised sumthin,, this advertisement sheet is for 2006 enduro's,the TE610 isn't even listed, just the wr125 & 250, then Te 250\450\510

it say's on the Te's there's a "Supplementary flywheel and torque damper"

would this be a missprint or sumthin lost in translation?? or is it the cushdrive basket that pavement pounders want so much??? anyone know??? I can't seem to find my owners manual.. if it's not a cush drive, does anyone know what they are referring to?? :ride:

Hey Ruffus. Not sure what the answer is exactly but the other thread might give a clue.
