Calipers to measure shims?

When you pull a shim, what do you use to measure the thickness?

I've got a 0-1" OD mic, but I have to convert (what a PITA). I've also got a cheap set of dial calipers that I use for woodworking - not accurate enough. I'd like to get a digital set that handles MM, but I'm not 100% sure I want to invest in a Starrett..

Any suggestions? (Can I find it on Amazon - that'd be even cooler!)

save yourself the money and just print out a conversion table for each shim. Then you just need to look at the sheet If you're going to buy calipers to measure them with, buy a really good set so that you get the resolution you need in your measurments.

These are all the valve shims available for the CRF. The shims are marked in mm but they are rounded to three digits: 1.825mm is acutally 182 on the shim and 1.875mm would be marked 188. As far as the measurements in inches, I carried them out four places. If I would have rounded them, you end up with two different shims with the same english measurement. Must be the shift between the two standards I guess. RR.

I have a digital Starrett and I use it all the time, well worth the money, like any good tool. It does both metric and inches, and you can swap back between the two so you don't have to calculate the equivalent.
