Stupid question.. oil change.. how much oil?

Recommended Posts

Last time I changed my oil.. I put too much in and had to drain some. I know what the manual says.. 1.27 quarts. I am trying to figure out how many ounces that is. The measuring thing I have is only in ounces.. Anyway.. I have been coming up with different amounts when trying to convert it. Asked other people.. and they are giving me even different answers..lol

Anyway.. I have come up with 40.64 ounces (Liquid)..

Like I said.. I know this is a stupid question.. but.. I am old and have been out of school for awhile.. and.. I will only ask once.. hehe.. I will note it for the next oil change.. hehehe

Thanks!!!

m-c-311,

i believe that you are overthinking this. first off, when you drain the old oil out you don't get *all* of it out. clearly there is some still in places that it Just Won't Drain from.

so instead of measuring the oil that goes in, why not just use the dipstick to tell you when it's full? put in a quart (or a bit more for '01 and '02s), start it up for a minute, stop it, and check the level. add a bit of oil. repeat until it's just right. pretty simple -- in fact you'll begin to recognize how much it takes to go from the bottom dipstick line to the top.

Sorry.. I have an '03

Yeah.. I knew some oil would still be in it..

So wrooster.. I should put in one quart.. and start it for a few.. then check it..

ok.. I just know the oil is crucial.. and I just dont wanna mess that part up.

and.. yes.. my manual says 1.27 quarts for a complete change.. oil and filter..

Oil and filter change is 1.16 quarts.

Quoteing the 2003 YZ250F manual

"Oil capacity:

Engine oil

Periodic oil change 1.0 L (0.88 Imp qt, 1.06 US qt)

With oil filter replacement 1.1 L (0.97 Imp qt, 1.16 US qt)

Total amount 1.2 L (1.06 Imp qt, 1.27 US qt)"

Not sure if the '03 is the same as my '04 but here's what I do. First get yourself a Ratio Rite (see? some 2-stroke artifacts DO have a use!) or other suitable measuring/pouring device. For an oil change w/o filter change I put in a hair under 34 (33.8) ounces. With filter change it's a hair over 37 (37.2) ounces. Done.

Let me add something I think is extremely important. It sounds from the amount of oil used like you have an '03 or later 250f. Think about this: the engine gets its oil from the tank(frame). When you change the oil, you drain the tank, but you fill the engine. When you start the engine, the tank is DRY until enough oil is returned from the engine to supply the feed side of the oil pump. Obviously, an engineer was involved. (sorry w, I couldn't help it)

So, run the engine BEFORE you change the oil to give the cams a fresh re-oiling. Start it immediately after adding new oil to put it back in the tank where it belongs. And KEEP THE REVS DOWN on any engine after changing the oil or any other cold start.

It's only 2 cents, but it's mine.

http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil_change.htm -->

"Preparation

Start engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn off engine and wait for five minutes."

we'd like our two cents back, with interest.

ThumperFAQ fails to explain why this is so important, particularly in the case of the '03 and later YZFs, which was my point. Unless a person understands why he should do something a certain way, he may be likely to decide it's unnecessary and skip it.

Your 2 cents will earn it's first penny in about 18 years at current rates. I'll send it to you at that time, if you like. ?
