RMX250 exhaust compatibility

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me what expansion chambers would work for a 1995 RMX250? I am wanting to find a pipe equivalent to the FMF Fatty or Gold.

Eric Gorr mentioned he thought the RM pipes from 1989-1994 would work....but I thought the bike most comparable to the RMX was the 1989-1992? I do know that the diameter of the ports changed through the years.

Thank you for the help!

I have just finished my 94 rebuild. You are looking for 50mm. I went thru almost every channel for a aftermarket pipe. Currently there is one OEM pipe on eBay $199 sandblasted.

1992 RM250 pipes do fit, sorta, but good luck finding those too.

The FMF needed a dent for a PV side cover bolt, and the Pro-Circuit needed a dent for the left side frame downtube…

I was ‘told’ 93 RM250 pipes also fit, but I can’t confirm that…

DEP was selling sweet looking cone pipes for 92 RM on eBay, but I don’t see them any longer.  I’d imagine it might need some tweaking too. ? Try contacting…???

DynoPort also makes (made?) RMX pipes, but they cost a lot and don’t look all that great. Never ran one myself…

So I was just looking at Pro Circuit’s website to see if the Platinum 2’s were still back ordered, and they’re not even on their website any longer to back order. ☹️

Looking further, I saw the Works pipe for 91-92 RMX priced for $112? Over $200 cheaper than any other 250 Works pipe? It too is back ordered, but still able to add to cart and pay for..

It would need the head coupler cut off your existing pipe and welded on for 93-98’s, but for $200+ off, I think it’d be worth it, IF, they don’t try and change the price after purchase…

They do still have 92 RM250 Platinum pipes available for back order too. I had a 92 RM Platinum 2 briefly, but returned it because it had a big ass dent in the expansion chamber. If the Platinum is the exact same shape as the Platinum 2, then it just needs a little clearancing for the left side frame down tube. ?

I bought a Bill's 1994 RM250 expansion pipe and silencer off ebay and it has the same head coupler as my stock 1995 rmx250 pipe. I still need to put it on the bike to see how well it fits up but they visually look the same side by side.

So I might have a couple more leads on pipes..

This DPR 1992 RM250 pipe.

Contacted him and he said he knew of one guy that fitted to RMX, but I don’t know that I like it much. Apparently it’s only a 1/2 cone pipe. Stamped steel leaving the cylinder. The photos that follow this one are of a different pipe, he says…

He also sent me on a wild goose chase, saying they’re cheaper on Facebook, but after an hour of looking through a shitload of used parts he’s selling on there, couldn’t find one. Now he says he doesn’t sell it on Facebook… So WTF???

Got a second lead from a overseas pipe builder that makes stainless steel cone pipes for Japanese version RMX’s. They’re on the hunt for a 1989-1992 RMX to copy from, but with the 50mm cylinder coupler, and shorter stinger to fit our 93-98’s…

Now this one I do like. stainless steel, and not a half assed 1/2 stamped, 1/2 steel cone pipe…

Hopefully it works out with these guys…?

Will update when I know more…

It’s looking REAL good for the Stainless cone pipe.

They’re on it, and have already sourced a 1992 RMX. That was quick!!! ?

I’m asking that they model it based off my all time favorite RMX pipe, the FMF Gold series, for those of us running Zeeltronic CDI’s or guys that just want more top-end power, and may get another modeled off the Pro Circuit for those that want more mid-range, or with stock CDI, to take advantage of the limited ignition advance window…

Putting a deposit down (hopefully) tomorrow, then they’ll start fabrication. ?

One I get it, check fitment, and most importantly, performance, I’ll provide details.

No need to blow up their email inbox quite yet. This will be a first for them on the USA model pipes, and may require some tweaking here and there…

This is great news! What will be asking price and gauge of material?

Current conversion rate, about $395. Shipping to USA around $75

Not sure on gauge, but I think it’s pretty thin.

I mis-understand when he could start on them. Sounds like a couple weeks, or around the end of this month. He said should arrive Mid - May

Getting two built to start. High RPM and a Mid-RPM.

He’ll send me some photos that I’ll upload here when they’re done and ready to ship. ?

Same here. For that price, and if they perform well, I’ll be getting ‘several’ spares myself… lol

I’ve always liked the look of custom cone pipes, but the last thing I want to do after a day of riding in the PNWet is immediately clean and oil a bare steel pipe before it rusts…

Stainless steel. No rust!!! ?

Edit;

It’s 1.0mm thick 304 stainless. He says he can make them in any thickness desired, but 1mm is the best compromise between strength and weight.

Great news!!!

The Mid-RPM pipe is done, and he’s now working on the High-RPM pipe.

This guy’s a fricken artist!!! ?

Lots of pie cuts in the divergence cone for good flow, and he got it tucked up there, nice and tight.

His original pipe he modeled off has dents in the spots he’s pointing out with the red marker, so he said I might need to check clearance in those two spots.

Fairly certain the marked spot in the last pict will be fine. It would be below the kickstart lever. Can’t think of any reason to need additional clearance there…
