Scotch brite air filter?

Recommended Posts

I have a 1995 rm125, and someone cut holes in the airbox shown in the photo below. I was wondering if I could use a Scotch Brite pad like the one shown in the photo blow and put it over the holes in the airbox? I am worried that the Scotch Brite might have flakes or pieces come off that go into the engine. But I do have a oiled Twin Air filter on the bike so it would have to go through that. What are your thouhts?20220306_192334.thumb.jpg.cb75b9c392cac1394ad7206e3d274f15.jpg20220306_192925.jpg.479a0d2e68255031f653a9a77c9ed211.jpg

they did a nice job cutting the holes.

just run PC racing filter skins and clean your filter after every ride bro. leave that box wide open just like it's creator intended.

and stop doing that to your poor seat with the tie-down.  why.  are you doing that?

I think its a good idea to put something inside to cover those holes, but still let air get through. As is, your air filter will get dirtier faster, but that may not be an issue to you. I'd be concerned that sand and or water could get to the filter a lot easier with wide open holes. And I agree, stop torturing that poor seat!

I would get a piece of 1/8" thick plastic, cut it to match the od shape (or slightly larger) of the piece with the cutouts in it & overlay it using bolts & spacers to allow air in but block anything else. Spacers could be 1/8 to 1/4". The original piece with the cutouts could be drilled & tapped or use rivets.

Considering Scotch Brite will scratch glass and chrome I wouldn't install it anywhere on my bikes period JMO. Even backed up by a real filter broken off fragments sticking around the edges of the regular filter later by chance engine inhaled sucked after servicing the real filter. Your better off cutting up flat foam used in Shop Vacs as a Pre Filter before the pleated fabric covered filter. Even flat foam filter material designed as a filter dampened with special filter oil. Not that blue cotton candy fiberglas type used in furnaces.

A recent purchase a Stens 100-626 Pre-Filter for the purpose of applying oil as lubrication to the fork tubes between the dirt seals and oil seals in my application. A one year only extra item added to bike, a why not with keeping the oil seal lubed?

Stens pre-Filter 7.2" x 7.9" x .65" thick; https://www.homedepot.com/p/STENS-Pre-Filter-for-Tecumseh-OV691EA-OV691EP-TVT691-and-VTX691-37361-102-454/313182515?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&&mtc=Shopping-BF-F_D28I-G-D28I-028_037_OUTDR_PW_ACC-NA-NA-NA-SMART-NA-NA-SMART_SHP&cm_mmc=Shopping-BF-F_D28I-G-D28I-028_037_OUTDR_PW_ACC-NA-NA-NA-SMART-NA-NA-SMART_SHP-71700000079956011-58700006728091443-92700060957828833&gclid=Cj0KCQiA95aRBhCsARIsAC2xvfxAVCHCioI3ypMJWJFgxTc4yKf1rN72R62s967tCNYz11qMvFfyIcQaAgMAEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Hunt around on Ebay, hell I have seen nice unbroken, worn away corners or damaged airboxes for a 38 year old XL600. almost twice as old.  ......~~=o&o>........

Also research different ways to tie down a motorcycle. Yours is not one of them.
