Steg Pegz?

Recommended Posts

Anyone use them on a dirt DRZ?

Just started riding in the dirt again after a lengthy hiatus and I’m having a hard time really gripping my DRZ400S with my knees/legs. I’m a little bit tall for the stock setup (6’4+), so I’ve put on Knight pegs, 4” of bar riser, and have a Seat Concepts tall seat on order. I just can’t quite find any good grip so far. I don’t think that the SC seat will be the ‘silver bullet’ even though it should be better than stock.

I’ve considered some stomp grip type of stuff on the frame, parts of the side panels, and perhaps even parts of the IMS 4.0 tank if it would help, but came across these Steg Pegz and was wondering if they may be worthwhile to try also.

I've bought some stick on grip material to try as well, I've scuffed the shine off all my panels digging in with my boots and knees - thinking the same about Pegz after watching Barry's video on it

Yep I use em and I love em. I made my own but it’s the same idea. You can grip the bike so much better with them. I haven’t had any bad experience with them yet and I’ve been using them for over a year now.

Those look great! Do you have a guide or seen something to help DIY for the drz?

I can take some more pictures tonight or tomorrow. I made a template out of cardboard and then when I figured I had the shape right, I cut it out of 1/8” aluminum plate with a jigsaw. You’ll have to bend it a little in a vice but that’s easy to do. Just a bit of trial and error to get it to fit right.
After that I used a holesaw in a drill to make the rubber nubs. I just used a hockey puck for that.

I used them for a while but found working on your body position to be far more beneficial. If you learn to lean forward and balance, squeeze your knees into the tank (I also use tank grips), you will then take all of the pressure off your hand to hold on. I ended up removing them. Check out Ryan Hughes youtube channel.

It also became a PITA to check / change the air filter as the peg needed to be removed to access the filter box.

Each to their own. Some people swear by them.

I’m sure that proper technique and better fitness are always the best option, but I’m just about 6’5, closer to 60 than I am to 50, and my knees have just about had all they will ever want. I’m interested in just about anything that gets me back on the trails having fun. Hughes was a fantastic rider, but I doubt his technique would be exactly the same as someone 8-10 inches taller than he is as well.

Right now my knees are actually higher than the seat, so it’s really hard to find a good way to squeeze the bike tight. Hopefully the taller seat will be just enough to make it a little bit easier, but I’d still be interested in something like these stegs.

Now that I am interested in them, it looks like they are pretty hard to find in the States. May end up having to order them from AUS just to get a pair.

Now that you explain it, it makes sense. As with B & B, Safari Tanks, Steg pegs are another great Aussie product.

Went ahead and ordered a set of the Heavy Duty Desert Stegs last night.  If they are too big I could always modify them to be smaller I think.

Dizzy, I hope that I didn't come off as too sarcastic.  I truly believe that with more time back on the bike and working on technique that I could overcome a lot of the issues for why I would want these, but to be honest I have no delusions of grandeur about spending tons of hours working on that technique and becoming a 'pro' in my old age.  I just don't have that sort of time to dedicate to becoming technically perfect and just want to enjoy each day I have left riding!

On a side note, Hughes is a pretty trippy dude and I could never fully buy in to his stuff anyway, even if I were young and "normal" sized!  That being said, he's in a rough way right now and I hope he recovers fully from his injuries but it sounds like he probably won't be riding for quite a while, if ever again.

Well all this talk makes me feel good that I'm 5,6.  I've been riding for 30 odd years and I find the DRZ an easy bike to ride.  The last few bikes have been performance 4T 450's with aluminum perimeter frames , my MX pants over the years have assimilated some of the grey looking aluminum frame where I have been gripping.  This now deposits it's self on the DRZ when I ride, usually standing, in technical stuff.  I have two dark grey patches on the plastics when I finish riding just under the seat position, one on the air-box lid and one just by the shock reservoir on the other side. I use my knees to grip, there are grip patches in these locations on the MX pants and the knee protectors I wear under the pants are padded on the inside to, all of this helps.  As far as sitting down my dirt DRZ has a gripper seat that works well with the MX trousers so I don't slip off backwards. I don't sit down very often on the dirt.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just received a set of their ‘heavy duty desert’ Pegz yesterday, put them on this morning. Don’t have time today to get up into the dirt, but just from riding around the block and around town I have a feeling that I am going to like them a lot.

Definitely gives you a lot of support while standing, but I’m going to need to spend a little bit of time figuring out the best position for the bumpers. With the lower Knight pegs I actually think that I’ll need to move them forward just a tad.

Now if my tall seat from Seat Concepts gets here, I should have everything just about set just in time for winter!!!!!

Okay, after riding with these for a few weeks and not quite enough time off road to enjoy them completely, I can say that they are actually pretty freaking awesome (for me).

I can understand that not everyone would like them the same as I do, but again after realizing that I am not getting any younger and just want to enjoy every ride I have, these do a great job of helping me stabilize myself while standing.  So far I only have one potential issue with them, but it's really not a huge one.  I got the 'heavy duty desert' pegs, which use 3 rubber bumpers.  They are perfect when wearing my riding boots, but if I am just commuting to work they are a little bit rough on the upper calves when standing up but you don't even touch them when sitting.

Other than that, I highly recommend for some of the more 'mature' riders who need just that tiny little bit of help to maintain a standing position for as long as they are able to.

Glad to hear you’re liking them! I found the exact same thing… perfect when I’m wearing tall MX boots and a little annoying if I’m wearing shorter shoes. Not annoying enough for me to take them off though! Haha. The benefit FAR outweighs the downside IMO

Would like to see pics of these if you think about it. ?
