What DOT tires are you using?

Recommended Posts

I'm very interested in this question too...  I bought the bike for tough jeep trails in the Colorado mountains, so the tires have to be great for this application first...BUT, I have really enjoyed riding it around town this winter and would like to continue this trend.  So while my primary purpose is rocky trails, I also enjoy jumping on it and running errands and doing some freeway miles.  I'm still on my RL stock tires but will need to change them this summer.  I think this is the same, or similar question as Dcrf450RL.  Recommendations???

Rear Dunlop D606 and a Kenda Trakmaster 2 front. Works well everywhere. A note though. If you lower your pressures for the off road stuff, reinflate for pavement and/or gravel travel. I use an Ultra Heavy Duty tube, front and rear, a Michelin 4 mm, so they will run too hot on road. Also, use rim locks!

I'm in the same boat, as I already have the cruiser bike. But man, this 450 is fun around town! :D

I went for the Bridgestone Battlecross E50 Front and Michelin AC10 Dual sport Rear, haven't got them on yet, but I'm excited to see the difference on all ground.

I think the best bet is Supermoto wheels, and just swap wheels when it's trail time. That's what I'll be doing. Just like Shaymer did:

I got tired, get it? Tired of this dilemma. So finally splurged on supermoto rims and I’ll put good dirt tires on my spare rims now. Easily switch back and forth when required. Best of both worlds finally.A9300477-CB8C-459C-9597-0D2082E1C3D5.thumb.jpeg.8257e561b72d75de193e15c4d0a48ad8.jpeg

Nice setup.

Do you mind telling us what the supermoto setup cost?...and where you purchased?

Thanks

I just installed the 606’s front and rear. I live in the high desert where it is soft and sandy mix. These are a 100% better than what comes stock and so far I’m loving them. I’ve had them out on the street, not as quiet or smooth but night and day in the dirt.

Nice, what size is the rear, 130 or 100?

Kenda K270 is the best dual sport option out there.  There are more dirt oriented options but they are shit on the street.  The K270 does pretty well as long as you're not expecting to ride slick mud or wet roots.

So, I went ahead and put the 120/90 Michelin AC10 on the rear and 90/90 Bridgestone Battlecross E50 up front.
No rim locks, factory tubes (Changed tires around 500km on clock) @ 22psi for both on and off road.

So far, haven't spun the tire on the rim but also have been keeping pressures at 22psi. These tires are both excellent in offroad situations. I couldn't believe the difference just the front tire had made while still using factory rear tire. The front felt planted and would turn where I pointed. The AC10 is pretty good in mud or clay/sticky dirt/moist dirt and in sand. In hard pack it does fine as well. On the street, @ 22psi, they feel a little squirrely after 100kph. It's not as noticeable if you raise the pressure a bit.

I've put 1200kms on my bike in a month.. so, looking at the wear I have on these tires after about 500-600 kms is a little concerning... as it's looking like a rear tire every year and a front every 2nd.
This really makes me want to get some supermoto wheels so that I could swap back and forth between them.  And maybe even for MX tires on the factory wheels. Use the supermotos for the streets.

Overall, I'd recommend this combo if you're wanting something more for offroad and don't do a lot of street riding.

I did just that, got dirts and the super Motos, doesn’t take but 1/2 hour to switch back and forth

RRDR505 I'm also in the 505.  How are you liking the 606's after running them for a bit?  I'm having a blast tearing up the stockers on the street and light off-roading, waiting to get some better tires before riding the gnarly stuff.

I'm amazed at how great this bike and stock tires carve up twisty canyon roads.  I've been doing some 100 mile rides with a friend on a BMW GSA1200 over a combo of paved and gravel roads.  He's amazed the RL is neck and neck with his bike on all surfaces.  I lean this bike over just like I do my road bike with 100% confidence.  The only place he can shake me is when we're forced to get on a freeway.  I know I probably have to switch tires before hitting tough trails this summer.  But in the meantime, I'm loving the RL as a 50-50 bike and really enjoy the stock tire grip and ride.  I worry that I won't be able to ride like this when I put true off road tires on the bike.  Maybe I'll try stock on the tough stuff and see just how bad it is.  I hate to give up the time times when I want to ride this bike like a naked scrambler.

Why do you need smaller / wider supermoto wheels? When they make street tires for the stock rim size? I was thinking of getting another set of dirt ? rims and running Dunlop Geomax 100% dirt on one set and Dunlop D404 100% street on the other.
