Add resistance to throttle

Recommended Posts

Anyone know of a product or method of adding some resistance to the throttle tube action?  I'm on my new 2020 YZ450F and the throttle is SO crisp and snappy with no resistance at all, it's just too light.  It's giving more arm pump than I've had in years and I feel like I'm gonna whiskey throttle it sometimes.  Im used to my 13 year old 07 CRF450R. The feel of the throttle has a lot of resistance because it's just old and it's just a bit slower return than a totally new bike.

Im not looking to change the throttle response in how the bike delivers the power or how the power is rolled on only the mechanical feel of the throttle twisting action. More like an old ass bike feel I guess.  So no need to suggest Z resistance throttle that is the opposite of what I want.  Throttle Tamer, or other cam type throttle tubes out there that is not what I want.  Those products change how the cable is pulled, and how power is delivered to the ground more for technical enduro riding,  not what I want.

Any products out there to help with this? I have never seen anything.

Aren’t you just feeling the difference between the glorious carburetor and the efi system?
you probably just have to get used to it.

efi tends to be jerky a low rpms and boring everywhere else.
where carburetors have a more organic feel.

Ya it’s defiantly a getting used to it thing for sure on the EFI but still want to add some resistance somehow.

Install an extra return spring somewhere.

I’m thinking like if the grip was rubbing agenst a doughnut of foam but that would not be reliable and would change over time.   spring will just make it harder to twist = more arm pump and I don’t think it will give the feel I’m looking for.

So you want more resistance that doesn't require extra effort to overcome. Interesting. Let us know when you find it.

Put some sand and glue between the bar and throttle tube. This will create resistance.

If you don't want arm-pump, try riding with your hands off the bars.

Guaranteed to work .....

Rode my 2021 yz450 yesterday for the first time (after break in) and though the exact same thing Bill! My previous bike was a 2014 yz 450 fuel injected and the throttle response is very different than the 2021. I was wondering if there was an adjustment somewhere. I will look in my manual to see. Please post back if you find something. I felt the whisky throttle as well. Potentially dangerous.

I was actually thinking of that really good weaved double stick tape carpet tape between the bar and grip tube.  Should work really good.  ?  OR maybe some electrical or duck tape but when I wrap it around the bar, I'll make sure I wrap it in a clockwise direction so the end will un roll nicely over time when twisting the throttle.  What do you guys think?

??  ??  ??  ??  ??  ??  ??

On a carb'd bike, one would adjust the throttle cable to get some freeplay in it.

I dunno the set-up on injected bikes..

With efi you have to call your IT guy, schedule an appointment for two weeks down the road, he will arrive late and slightly buzzed.
He then will hook up his laptop and recode your throttle cable app.

Your just used to your old sticky unmaintained throttle. A proper throttle should be smooth and snap back when you let it go. It should have spring tension but minimal friction.

It sounds like you are looking for more friction. You can get that but putting thick grease under the throttle tube if that's what you want.

+1 for above or fill the inside of  the cables with water/let side to rust OR if NOT running full wrap guards, push the throttle tube into the end of the hand bar?

Otherwise I think the OP might actually want something like a G2 Throttle Tamer

No I'm not personally calling you OLD cus I'm OLD but IMO all throttles should snap closed.

i slightly confused as to why you think the throttle moving freely open/closed is causing your arm pump unless your just holding on for dear life with both hands which IMO would mean your getting arm pump on both hands?

Maybe different grips?

Im using my all time favorite grips ODI EMIGs.  I think lack of resistance is making me grip to hard. Only arm pump on right.
