Chain Slider Wear

Recommended Posts

So I noticed that my chain is starting to wear through my chain slider. I noticed it started to do it after I switched chain lube. I used to use Maxima lube but it was so messy and sticky and the fling off was terrible. Switched to Bell Ray Super Clean which ends up pretty dry but not very lubey. After switching I noticed this wear on the chain slider. I've since moved to Motorex Offroad lube.

My question is, would the lube be the culprit here or is this just a case of the slider being 16 years old and it's just breaking down? Can the chain tension being a little on the loose side cause it? I don't want to drop $50 on a new one if it's just going to happen again. Thanks!

16 years!

I usually get 2 seasons at most out of a chain slider, either trail or track riding.

The chain lube is irrelevant to slider wear.

If your countershaft sprocket has been changed to a smaller diameter one (less teeth) than stock, that will increase slider wear.

It’s definitely going to happen again since that’s it’s job. It’s a wear item and needs to be replaced periodically.

Sorry, S 15t

Summat def up then if your chain slider has worn out this quick

Only thing I can think of is your chain tension being too tight causing chain to rub on the slider with more force hence wearing the slider

It dont look worn to me.

You gotta realise, the rollers of the chain ride on the middle ridge of the slider. It looks mint.

Ya, it's hard to tell from the picture but the middle ridge has a new wear groove on the side of it too where the plates are wearing into it The 2 grooves at the back of the slider weren't there at all up until a month or 2 ago. So I rode it for 2 years with no wear at all, then in the last 2 months all that wear.

Is your chain worn out ?

There is lots of sideways movement on a worn chain.

That is definitely a possibility. What's the best way to check for that? Tugging on the chain off the rear sprocket it's not pulling off with much slop, but side to side there seems to be a decent amount of movement. Chain is roughly 3 years old at this point. Probably 3000 miles of mostly trail riding on it

If it dont pull much off da sprocket, it aint worn.

Buy a new chain guide thingy, so you dont have nightmares...?

...i dont, even after 15 years and 100,000 kms on my original !

I don't think chain tension will have any effect on that guide as the chain is held taut along the top when under power, and is slack when engine braking.

The lube might be an issue as rubber/plastic guides will last longer if oiled.

I'm still on my original btw - it's over 20 years old and has about 11,000 miles of trail riding on it. I've have run lots of different gear combinations too.
