2006 KTM 450 EXC Shifting Issues - What is this piece?

Recommended Posts

My 2006 KTM 450 has about 180 hours. I ride it mostly street (no cushhub) pretty aggressively doing wheelies/jumps. I purchased it last year with about 140 hours. The bike ran great until a friend took it trail riding where he did an oil change for a long Saturday group ride. Long story short, used/old oil was used and it was too low also. The bike came back with shifting issues (would not downshift). I did an oil change and saw some crap on the magnetic drain bolt, but nothing significant. The bike began shifting again, but I had to rev up the engine quite a bit to get into neutral while in first – the bike would also role forward while stopped at lights (Normal though correct?). If the bike was off shifting was perfect. I put about 20 hours on the bike since this happened over 2 oil changes, but last weekend it started getting stuck in gear not downshifting even with the bike off.

I did an oil change and no luck – still stuck. I bled the clutch and it down shifted while off and I took it on a 30 second ride and it got stuck again. I took off the right-side engine cover and saw this piece sitting right below the detent arm. Anybody know where it broke off of? I looked at every single engine diagram I could find and do not see where it came from.

Prior to seeing this piece I assumed a shifter fork or the detent arm was bent from wheelies. What is the next step for me?

That looks like the bearing race on your shift locating lever. Check the rear main drain plug, you need to come up with the balls to check engine damage. Most of us went to the solid roller issued in 2007 for earlier models.

Thank you for the info. That looks to be the exact problem. When I search for "KTM Shift Locating Lever" they all show a small bearing on the arm/lever (see photo). Is my diagram correct?

According to this website, I need to at least buy part #20? It looks like the bearing is already attached.  https://www.babbittsktmparts.com/oemparts/a/ktm/524b8205f8700231ac4974a1/shifting-mechanism

Maybe what happened was it got stuck in gear/something was damaged due to improper oil, someone slammed down on the gear to get it to downshift and the bearing broke?

Trying to get an idea of anything else that may be broken prior to this weekend when I start inspecting more.

I replaced mine before it broke years ago. They fail with normal use. Usually the only problem when you find it broken. #20 might be a solid roller, I bought the 2007 RFS part. Check the part number. If they are the same, they are both rollers, not bearings.

You can even see the cage from the roller slid down over the detent lever. They eventually just break. Yamaha had a few years of the YZ 125 which broke the same way. All you'll need is the detent lever to fix the shifting issue.

Now, as far as getting the rest of the pieces out of the motor..... Good luck!

I had this happen to my 07. I was able to locate all the bearing pieces. Got a new part and all was good. Easy fix.
I forgot how many balls there were from the bearing, 8?

I haven't had a chance to look at my bike in person since I posted, but will be working on it tomorrow. Did you have to remove the clutch basket? Do I need any special tools? Just bend the tab and then I use a large socket on the nut, correct? I've just been reading over the manual. I am sort of a novice mechanic. Wanna make sure I have everything I need before starting.
