Sherco 300 sef-r on the road?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! ?
One thing i wonder is how the Sherco 300 sef is one the road? Whats like the top speed of this bike and can it handle cruising on the highway at 65 mph? Do you guys have any experince with this bike?

This is a dream bike i have recently found that i hopefully will get as my first motorcycle! Thx guys!

I have a '19 Factory Edition. The bike is smooth and stable at speed on a dirt road. You are turning 8500 rpm at 100 km/h with stock gearing.

It'll do fine for runs from 1 trail to another, but if you plan on doing proper road miles I would get a spare set of wheels with more road tyres to make it smoother and put a smaller sprocket on the rear.

Keep in mind you won't get much more than 90km to a tank of fuel in the bush, so tearing done the freeway for mile after mile, you will go a lot less.

Hey thx for responding dude, alright nice! What would put smaller sprocket on rear make a difference? Better top speed? Whats the fastest you have gone on this bike? What you think the top speed is?

If a Ktm 250 exc can cruise at highway at 65 mph for some time, the Sherco 300 sef should be able aswell logically.. right?

A smaller rear sprocket will increase top speed if the motor has the power to drive that higher ratio, or it will drop the rpm for a specific speed.

With stock gearing of 13/48 a 2019 sef300 will be doing 9000 rpm. On knobby tyres and a single cylinder, that is a lot of vibration.

Changing the front sprocket is usually the best option. Lower cost, easer to change and you can probably use same chain length. If engine spins 8500 @ 100 km (62 mph)with 13t this will change to 7900 with a 14t. Just pick one up, try it and move up or down from there. Bike should have no trouble cruising at 65 mph with the right gearing.

A smaller rear sprocket for higher top speed okay, thx

This bike can run the road but not fun at all. Then IF you have a vibrator motor bolts will start disappearing. Overall this is a close ratio transmission and hates the road. I have done several DS/Enduro with a 2014 and a 2017. What's the top speed?? I have hit 75mph peek but normal riding was around 50mph. I can't stress this enough that miles of road at steady throttle above 50mph will shorten the life. More steady or fast speeds = shorter life.

I found on both my 300sef's that road riding I gained mileage. On my 2014 any quick throttle near idle would drink the fuel especially on soft map. Soft map consistanly used more gas then hard. Road use hard map I gained 10 miles per tank vs. soft. On the 2017 the differences were much smaller even the feel between settings.

If you change the sprockets from stock your woods performance will suffer. If you want a bike that can more easily jump between on/off road get a Beta, KTM or Husky. With the wider trans and better mileage (KTM/Husky) it's a win win.

See above post (s),,,, you will have trouble holding 65mph!

Most of the time my bikes are trail ridden with some exploring type of riding, then a few races and DS events. Problem is there are other brands that cross over easier so IF you are buying to do this type of riding Sherco's don't fit as good as other brands. No one here is looking for a road bike like what Mr. Sweden implying but a good bike that can live happy on the road connecting trails or as a light DS. Since I owned two and have miles of road use connecting trails, races or events,,, should take a listen. OR buy one and roll the dice as to if you will be happy on the road and or happy with the maintenance/durability. If you have to have a Sherco grab one of their other models like the 500 or even a 300 2t.  At the demo ride I really like the 250sc which was 2x the bike the 300F was. More power everywhere with the same smoothness and a plus with a simplistic motor that will last 2x+ as long.

If riding solo at your own speed, not trying to hold a speed limit or pace cars or other riders its tolerable.  They just don't like steady speeds very well, maybe one sweet spot and load will be fine.  Wheel balance helps, as does some powervalve tuning to help off throttle surging.  You can gear for higher speed, but the dirtbike fork rake starts making them feel kind of sketchy the faster you go.  My experience is with 300 xcw.

OP is asking about the 4T 300.

Does the 450/500 have different transmission ratios?

Yes they do,,,, more desert gearing then woods. Bigger thing is the HP,,, you can change gearing for the road and still have the torque to get thru the woods. We have a 2015 450sef in our riding group and its handles the road 2x as good as my 300sef's.

I have a brand new 2022 sef300 factory. Its is a great enduro bike and great for me to explore local trails and play a bit. As for road use... sure, for short road links between trails its fine but for anything more id rather insert numerous excitable wasps into my anus.

Its an appalling road bike, in fact it is NOT a road bike. If you are looking for a useable, comfortable, regular use road bike think again and buy something other than a focused, off road, enduro bike.

If the majority or even a large percentage of your riding will be on road then buy a road bike with

( albeit limited) off road ability.

A dedicated enduro is not designed for the road, it will be uncomfortable, it will rattle your teeth, its service intervals and fuel consumption will bankrupt you. Sorry, I fully understand why you want one but your question and everything that comes after tells me its the wrong bike.

Test ride several suitable bikes ( not enduros) and get a feel for what you want and need BEFORE deciding what bike excites you.

Good luck

Natch
