Which model year to buy

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have been searching for quite a while. I want to buy an used crf 250 r, only for MX track riding. I just sold my yz125 which I rode for 2 years.

I am sure I want to buy Honda, but I can't decide which model year to buy. I want to buy one with old engine with single cam shaft but I am not sure if I should look for older one with coil spring forks (which seems like a better option right now) or buy a newer one with sff air forks.

I would take it apart during winter so an older bike shouldn't be a problem. It's mostly about suspention, chassis and engine changes. Is there any years that is better option for amateur rider? I won't be riding any races maybe only 1 or 2 local races just for fun.

Thank you for your replies and sorry for my english.

If it were me. I would do my absolute best to find a 2014. EFI and still has a spring fork. Plus it a little newer in general.
Some say the first year of EFI (2010 for the 250) was down on power from the carbed bike but was fixed in 2011.
I think the 2010-2013 chassis is better stability at speed and the 14-17 had better cornering characteristics. I havent had any actual experience just what ive read and heard. Either gen is going to be a good bike.

A cheaper option would be the 08 or 09.  They are carbed bikes and still have good suspension and handling.

I forgot to mention, I want EFI version and I also heard that first years weren't really good and I should look for 2012 or newer. Is that true?

I would say 2013 and newer but that depends on how picky you are and your riding speed/type.

Google shootouts or reviews...

I have read them almost all. ? I mostly care about what People think about air forks. Oldest year i would buy is probably 2012 based on reviews. I would also like to know if there is noticable diference between 2013 and 2014.
