weird electrical problem on 200rr

Recommended Posts

So the odo hasn't worked on my bike since new.  When bouncing the front end up and down the odo would jump all over the pance from 199mp to 43, 79, 3, and so on.

I figured it was just a bad sensor cable and had the dealer order me a new one.  while waiting for that to arrive, I borrowed a buddies wire and same problem.  Eventually it just stopped registering anything.  and I've only ridden it about 15 miles.  An annoyance, but not the end of the world.

now, last night I'm working on the bike and changing handlebar position and the odo jumps to life, so I'm trying to figure out where the loose wire/short is and I'm wiggling all of the wires and I can't find it.  but the odo is going crazy like there is a short for sure.  then I tighten down the clutch master and there is no action at the odo no matter what wires I shake.  loosen the clutch master and it happens again....very weird almost like the clutch master/line is providing a ground for something?  check out this video:

I'm stumped on this one, thinking about getting the race harness as there are just way too many wires on this thing

Bring it back to the dealer. The odometer/speedo’s on these things are a known issue. I’ve had mine replaced under warranty on my 2016. They will replace yours and fix any faulty wiring under warranty.

I went through 2 OEM speedos and 2 TT E2’s on my 17’ 250rr, all covered under warranty. Currently on my 5th one and use it just for a clock (removed speedo cable). Gave up trying to get them to last.

I ended up getting the race harness and am glad I did. Happy not to have the OEM rat nest wiring harness anymore. Still have my headlight with a on/off switch, and can run a speedo if I want. Any connection point that wasn’t sealed I covered with liquid electrical tape.

Not the odo unit itself, tried my buddies and same problem.  My dealer will clearly cover it, but then I have to drop it off there and wait for them to find the problem, order parts....yada yada.  I prefer to find it myself.

I thought you said you tried your buddies speedo cable/sensor wire in the computer and still the same problem? Did you hook up your buddies actual speedo unit/computer to your bike? If not, then I’m telling you it’s the head unit/odometer/computer itself. Whatever you wanna call it, the trailtech unit/computer/odometer thing is your problem. Possible some faulty wiring as well. We all know the Italians aren’t known for their quality electrical work. Call Town and Country, Eric will tell you he’s got a pile of the factory units there that he’s replaced under warranty, KTM’s and Beta’s alike.

I understand trying to figure it out yourself, but in the long run you might save time and certainly money just bringing it back to have them sort it out and warranty it. If it was a brand new car would you take advantage of the warranty or try to fix it yourself?

Sorry, Yes I tried my buddies odo on my bike with his sensor wire as well.  Now here is where things get weird(er):  I bring his wire and odo back to his house, and try my computer on his bike with his odo wire and it doesn't work which is what we expected.  He then plugs his known good odo in and his now doesn't work?  WTF right?  So we think that maybe my odo was bad and possibly did something to his bike/ECU.  Later that night he calls me and says his is working after he changed the ODO battery..  So I'm thinking what are the odds that we both had bad batteries, but what the heck, I went and got a battery and it's still no good.

frustrating!

I hear you about the warranty, it's just a hassle to bring it, drop it off, wait for diagnosis...wait for parts....pick it up.  I prefer to handle the little stuff myself if I can.

It sucks having the bike down for x amount of time.

His bike isn't "down". The odometer is very down and will very likely never work right. I gave up hope and ride with my phone using avenza, my trails, or On X Hunt applications.

The hell??? Whatever you want to call it, it will be “down”/not in his possession/unable to ride it if he drops it off at the dealership for warranty repair. Which is exactly what I was talking about. Not sure why you felt the need to pick apart what I’m saying.

Regardless, I agree the factory odometer/speedo units are unreliable to say the least. I’ve been considering just going with an ICO Checkmate instead.

He has many options to temporarily address the odometer. Most expedient would be big wire cutters and go ride.

no need to cut wires yet, I can ride without the odo, just wondering if anyone else experienced problems like this was all.  In the end I'll probably end up ordering the race harnes OI delete kit and just get a regular trail tech endurance II odo.
