Ideas to patch hole in tire?

Got a brand new Michelin front tire that I put a hole in the day I mounted. 

Hole is in the middle of the tread, about a half inch angled cut with the hole being roughly a #2 pencil size. 

Anybody know of a way to close this up and have it be reliable to run a tube?

Not sure what actually caused this but I'm guessing some sort of sharp object and obviously puncture my UHD rear tube.

I had some left over 6MM yoga mat I originally used to line my home made studded tires for winter riding so I just used  say a 6"x3" piece and use it as a liner between the hole/tube with no issues with about 12 hrs since.

Otherwise, IMO you could also us a piece of an older inner tube ro take to an auto tire place and have them put on a hot patch cus its what they use for non tube vehicle tires ?

I am ASE, GM, and FORD certified “auto people” and idk what a hot patch is lol. But, I no longer turn wrenches professionally so maybe I’ve missed it  

 

we had patch plugs  basically a patch with an actual plug  worked great for car tires I just didn’t think it would be the right choice for this? I was thinking a dirtbike tire took a lot of abuse and that wouldn’t be strong enough. 

I’m definitely down to try it though!!

Ya a plug would work fine as well IMO

I really want bibbs, bad. I just don’t have the money to get set up right now. 2 bibbs, new tires, plus a rabaconda is a tough pill to swallow. Especially considering that’s the first flat (knock on wood) I’ve had in a looooong time. I run high psi at races and try to pick good lines.

Haven’t been able to find a place that does Vulcanizing. I haven’t tried any medium/heavy duty shops either though. 

 

I think im gonna patch plug it and then glue a piece of an old inner tube on it just for extra protection.

This is what we used back in the 80s but I think the EPA shut those down.  Haven't seen one for years.

A decent tire shop should have a machine that will apply the heat without the flame, but I doubt you will find on that will do it on that tire.  They will probably give you a line about it not hold and they can't warranty their work.

A quick search of hot patch will take you here:

Never tried the latter but might be worth it if you can't get something else to work.  If your running a tube I wouldn't plug it.  Plugs are great for small round holes but I would suspect your tube might push out a plug on a hole that big.
